Pompey Academy were beaten 2-0 by Plymouth in their latest Merit League One encounter at Copnor Road.

Both goals arrived in the first half, with a Will Jenkins Davies brace enough to secure three points for the Pilgrims.

Assistant professional development phase coach Sam Hudson said: “We were obviously disappointed to lose, but we actually got a lot out of the game and thought that we performed well.

“For 80 minutes of the game we were the much better team, with 19 entries into their penalty area compared to their nine.

“There were also 45 final third entries to their 26, but that final touch or pass was the thing that was missing.

“It’s the fourth time we’ve faced Plymouth this season and that’s probably the best we’ve played, yet we haven’t scored and ended up losing.

“Other than a game before Christmas when we finished with 10 men because of players joining up with the first team, that’s the first time we haven’t found the net since the opening day.

“A lot of that was down to a lack of cutting edge in the final third and it’s an area where we need to be more consistent.

“We had more shots than them and yet went in two goals behind at the break, so were missing that clinical touch.

“The goals we conceded were not necessarily avoidable, but we can certainly learn from them. Other than that, our defence were never really troubled.

“There were a lot of individual challenges that the boys hit very well and we just need to string some performances together where all departments are firing.”

Pompey: Bastian Smith; Brian Quarm, Josh Dockerill, Jack Fox, Harvey Laidlaw; Elliott Simpson (Gabriel Kamavuako 60), Mitch Aston (Adam Murray 87); Koby Mottoh, Adam Payce, Harry Jewitt-White; Destiny Ojo (Sam Folarin 60)
