I mean, he didn't accuse *you* of being a white supremacist, but okay.

He did. He lumped me in with them in a patronising and ridiculous way. Plus I already know all of his views. All I would need to do is read the guardian or something and I could get all of his regurgitated beliefs from one issue of any left wing paper.

I can't actually find the argument now, but from memory, that was a pretty wild extrapolation of yours to say that he was calling you a white supremacist.

“Any left wing paper” is an intriguing comment as there really aren’t many. Might be more in Canada I guess

It’s very simple. When someone accuses me of being a white supremacist simply because I believe in freedom of speech and freedom of medical choice, I lose all personal respect for their opinions. But I still respect his right to hold his views, however stupid they may be.

I can respect someone’s right to hold their views, without respecting the views themselves.

Which is why muting someone is nothing like cancelling them.

Os won't see this, but for anyone else reading: I didn't call him a white supremacist. I stated that he had been misled into believing that he had common cause with a group that featured a rather heavy white supremacist presence.

And then some of those white supremacists got arrested for conspiracy to commit murder because they had a bunch of assault rifles that they intended to use to kill cops, which I feel proved my point a tad.

By the way, the second part of your comment there is absolutely patronising and ridiculous.

And if anyone thinks I'm exaggerating in calling the Diagolon/Plaid Army nitwits "white supremacists", here's their leading figure explicitly stating that there's a race war going on, calling on his followers to 'accelerate' (the term used by these sorts to indicate accelerating the timeline of the civil wars they expect to happen by, y'know, starting them), showing off his white supremacist literature, and calling for the killing of their enemies.

Yes.

I like Os, but I think he's gone down a rabbit hole with a lot of this stuff, sadly, and that he's now seeing things that people are saying which really aren't there. But hey, there we go.
This is always the problem with having conversations where you can’t hear or see the person you’re talking to.

I had this once on an exchange that quickly became just over whatsapp and normally during commuting time when I was tired and grumpy on a train. Needless to say things just deteriorated and deteriorated and a relatively minor disagreement just blew up and became pretty much unfixable

I remember learning on some course I did a million years ago that in terms of the information you communicate when you’re having a face to face conversation, only about 7% comes from the actual words you use. The rest is down to tone, volume, facial expressions, and other body language. None of that, obviously, is available on a written forum.

It’s no wonder misunderstandings like the one we just had on the other thread happen occasionally, in fact it’s amazing we all don’t end up swearing at each other!

Oh absolutely - i probably would only have got half that ridiculous spiel out before being laughed at. Or it would have come across no way near as blunt (certainly that one)

Haha. I like you too. But I think the fact that I can entertain the idea of being in an echo chamber by definition means I’m not in one.

My views aren’t really that different to everyone on here. The only differences are:

- I think medical mandates for covid are unjustified to the extent they are immoral.
- I don’t believe the truckers are right wing or extremists. I think they are being totally misrepresented by most media sources.

Everything else stems from those beliefs.

I see the vilification of the truckers as extremely similar to the vilification of trade unions.

I agree that we lose nuance on here. I am 100% sure that if we were all in person we’d probably get on like a house on fire - after all we are all saints fans.

We’re in very, very odd times right now, and we’re at the toddler stage still of understanding the impacts of the digital age on thought, discussion, opinions, offence etc. We’re also at this weird point where we’re overwhelmed by media and opinions (Spotify is media, YouTube and Russell Brand are media). We’re actually all media right now, and we’re our own publishers - be it here, Twitter, Facebook etc - but not subjected to the same stringent rules that traditional publishing outlets are subject to.

Frankly it’s a clusterfuck, but we have to believe that we’ll ultimately muddle through it.
