This is too true to be funny.
The next time you hear a politician use the word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about whether you want the 'politicians' spending YOUR tax money.
A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases.

A billion seconds ago it was 1959. and Rovers lost to City 2-1

A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.

A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.

A billion pounds was half a day away at the rate our government is spending it!

    Stamp Duty
    Tobacco Tax
    Corporate Income Tax
    Income Tax
    Council Tax
    Unemployment Tax
    Fishing Licence Tax
    Petrol/Diesel Tax
    Inheritance Tax
    (tax on top of tax)
    Alcohol Tax
    G.S.T.
    Property Tax
    Service charge taxes
    Social Security Tax
    Vehicle Licence / Registration Tax
    Vehicle Sales Tax
    Workers Compensation Tax
    Carbon Dioxide Tax

    YOU THINK THIS IS FUNNY?
Not one of these taxes existed 60 years ago and our nation was one of the most prosperous in the world.
We had absolutely no national debt.
We had the largest middle class in the world. Mum stayed home to raise the kids, Dad and teachers were allowed to discipline kids.
    A criminals life was uncomfortable.

Boat people were kids sailing on the harbour.

    What the hell happened?

Good post JGF but one fact is incorrect.
65 years ago after the Second War finished, Britain was bankrupt. The war had taken it's toll. We had constant power cuts and until 1951/2 still had rationing.
My great-uncle was Foreign Minister at the time and spent a lot of time pleading with the USA for financial help. When it came it was as a loan that Britain repaid over the next sixty years. The last payment was in 2008.
Many of the taxes listed were in existence then. Tobacco, alcohol and purchase tax was the forerunner of VAT. We even had dog licences!
We are richer as a nation but have lost our respect for others and their property.
So some things better but also a lot of losses.

It is not that long ago society placed placed people with disabilities in asylums and work houses for their entire lives. That was evil.

    Some things have improved.
