If this has already been raised in my 4 months away I apologise but am I the only one who fears that 40 points might not be enough to stay up this year due to improved form of certain other Clubs and the general levelling of performances throughout the league. I fear we may need 43 or even 44 points to be safe which means us getting 20 or 21 points from the final 14 games. 5 wins and 6 draws - I think we could struggle.

I don't think it's been discussed at length, bor.

It's so difficult to say. If Villa start to pick up a few more points I think 39-40 will be enough. From what I remember, if one (or two) clubs get severely cut adrift at the bottom, a higher points total tends to be required for guaranteed safety.

I'd tend to disagree. If you look at the bottom 6 only ourselves and Bournemouth are averaging more than a point a game
    ( last 10 game points) [last 5]
    15 Norwich 21 6 5 10 24 35 -11 23 (14) [9]
    16 Bournemouth 21 5 6 10 23 37 -14 21 (13) [5]
    17 Swansea 21 4 7 10 19 30 -11 19 (6) [5]
    18 Sunderland 21 5 3 13 26 41 -15 18 (12) [6]
    19 Newcastle 21 4 6 11 22 38 -16 18 (11) [2]
    20 Aston Villa 21 2 5 14 17 37 -20 11 (7) [5]

Over 5 & 10 games we top the form chart. Over 10 games if you exprapolate Newcastle would reach 37pts with 19 more, Sunderland 38pts with 20 more and the swans a measerly 10 more for 29!

Safe as houses we are, assuming recent form continues!

    Bah!

    No chance.

18th position are on 18 points from 21 games. They aren't going to get 24 points from the 17 remaining games. That would be a near 50% win rate.

Completely agree. And not just 18th, you'd also need 17th to get 23 points and 16th to be above par with 21 points..

Basically it would need all of the bottom teams to improve dramatically.

I can see only 36 points needed to survive, but suspect it will be around 38. A bottle of Glenmorangie says we get 17 points from 17 games and we will not go down.

I love Glenmorangie. Nikka Coffey Grain is quite similar and even better (though more expensive...)

I'm really into my sweet single malts at the moment.

My GF bought me a 12 months whiskey tasting subscription where I get small bottles of five rare whiskeys (18 yrs plus) to try regularly. It's superb!

Having worked for Oddbins for many years, we got to taste 1 or 2.
I don't drink spirits now but the Islay malts, especially Port Ellen, (no longer in production <wah>) and Caol Ila used to hit the spot for me <ok>
    And Ardbeg at a push!

Like everything, it's a matter of taste and choice. There's no right or wrong, just different preferences. Personally, for me the Islay malts don't do it. Glen Livet I do like, but there's something special about the thin crispness of Glenmorangie for me. Dave obviously thinks otherwise. Was it football we were discussing before this? ;)

Discussing malts is more interesting - I used to live about 2 miles from Bells Inchgower distillery (a LOT of years ago!!!!!)
Not a big whisky drinker, but used to like Glen Livet and occasionally Glenmorangie. I've heard the whisky from St Georges near Snetterton is pretty good to, but haven't tried it!!!
