I think that as a progressing club, more emphasis should be put on our final points total, rather than final league position.
Obviously, a team would rather finish in 4th place with 70 points, than 5th place with 74 points, as that would mean CL football, but for a team like Sunderland, I think progression should be measured by points, not position.

My question to you is this:

Last season saw us finish with 47 points in 10th position.

Would you see one, none, or both of the following scenarios as an improvement on last season?

    50 points in 11th position
    44 points in 9th position

For me its gotta be the higher league position.

We need to pick up more points at home this season..

In the away league form i think we finished around 6th, but in home league form it was 16th.

Not an easy question this one, but its position. From me.

As someone who watches them week in week out, those 6 points are the difference between 6 losses being 6 draws, which means 6 less depressing weekends :)

No brainer, final league position is all that counts. Teams from mid to lower final tally is dependent on how many points the top teams drop. Like freak results like us winning at stamfors bridge and Newcastle winning at arsenal. Remember we went down with 40points under Reidy but have stayed up with less points since.

Obviously, a champions league, or relegation battle is a different kettle of fish, where league position is everything, but if we got fewer points than last season there is no way I could see that as an improvenent...IMO...like :)

I would. If we finished higher with lower points that means it all the teams around us have got fewer points. E.g if the top 4 all get 75+ points this would have a knock on effect right down the table. Also the higher you finish the more prize money you receive. So your preference would cost the club 3m pound.

If prize money was awarded on points and not position would it make fora more attacking league? Sorry, just a thought....

I think you've misunderstood the question.
The question basically, was "what is the best way to measure a teams improvement?"
Points, imo, has to be the best yardstick because position relies too much on the performances of other clubs. On the final day last season, our final placing was purely down to the results of OTHER clubs results, and therefore cannot be the best parameter to judge the improvement of OUR club.
Of course, the final position is the b all and end all, and the higher we finish the better...regardless of the number of points we have, but it shouldn't be used to judge our progression.

I would say finishing tenth again this season would still be progress, taking into account a better cup run and stuffing the mags.

A lot depends on how well the teams around you perform etc and it is a VERY tough league this year.

Mixture of the 2 for me.

44 points last year (which we got the year before) we would have finished 15th
47 points the year before (which we got last year) we would have finished 11th
36 points the year before (which we survived on) we would have finished 16th and survived 2 years ago, but last year 19th and demoted.

Looking back on the last few seasons though, 50+ points is enough for top 9-10, 57-60 points top 6-7 60+ points, European places, 75+ points top 4.

so 36-44-47 with 2 disastrous slumps in that, i would like to see 57-60 points this season, not saying that will get us 6-7th in the table, but it would definately get us 7-9th

I would be well chuffed with 59 points, beating the 58 and 57 point seasons of 99 and 2000.

I think we will finish between 55-60 points about 8th, barring injuries etc.
    1 Man utd
    2 Chelsea
    3 Man city
4 Liverpool (good sinings, Suarez is brilliant)
5 Arsenal (selling too many good players, and not replacing them)
    6 Spurs
    7 Everton
    8 Sunderland
9 Aston villa (selling Young, and Downing a mistake)
    10 WBA
after that it is tough to predict, if get Kranjcar and Bellamy 7th.
