It's time for the yellow ball to make it's annual appearance as we go into dark afternoons also it's goodbye to October a month we did not win a game in, however November's start couldn't be tougher with the arrival of Villa and the Sky TV camera's, just as we have hit an indifferent patch of results.
If Villa go up this year they may well thank us because the fixture between the two sides last season saw the end of Di Matteo after his Villa side were well and truly demolished 2-0 by a North End team which played to it's potential. In place of the Italian they appointed Steve Bruce who settled the club down and got them into a position were they finished well away from the relegation zone. At the moment Villa are in the play off zone following yesterday's rather average Second City Derby following a 0-0 draw.
They also lost Kodjia with an ankle injury which means he's out on Wednesday likely forward line will probably be Horan and the youngster Davis who has made a decent impression this season. Fairly experienced side with Terry, Hutton and Whelan in the starting line up. North End will need to be wary of giving away free kicks with the expertise of Hourihane at dead ball, they also have the more than useful Adomah. No mugs this lot. Will be a decent atmosphere with over 2500 at the moment on the way from the Midlands.
As for us the centre of defence will almost very likely be Boyle and Woods as makeshift as it gets, not sure whether the manager rates Boyle, may also be the time to give Earl a break although again the inexperienced O'Connor is the only other left back we have.
Browne should return in place of Robinson but maybe it's time for Mavididi to start. We'll see on Wednesday

Aston Villa can lay claim to being the founders of the Football League, through the pioneering work of their Scottish chairman William McGregor, who first suggested the idea of a league to the major clubs of the late 1880s.

North End and Villa were no strangers to each other before that inaugural season of 1888/89, having met in numerous friendlies, as well as the FA Cup in 1887/88.

In all we have faced each other precisely 50 times here in league matches here at Deepdale. Goals from Ben Pearson and Jordan Hugill, together with an injury time penalty save from Chris Maxwell, giving us the points in the most recent encounter last season.

Back in that first season, Villa were the only team to deny us a home win with a 1-1 draw in November and they ended up as runners-up, although 11 point behind us. Since then, we have won twice as many games as Villa (26 to 13) with 11 matches drawn, but this is only the second league match between our two sides here at Deepdale in 43 years.

Prior to that, the record shows games that generally feature plenty of goals, with scorelines in our favour that include three wins by 4-1, one each by 4-2 and 4-3 and a 6-1 thumping of the Villans in 1920.
Villa have had two big victories here, the first of these when they began the first club to score five goals against us on a home league match, way back in 1894. They triumphed 5-2 in what was our 73rd home game in the Football League and won even more convincingly in 1899, this time by 5-0 as the power base in English football moved away from Preston.

Several players have appeared in both lilywhite and claret and blue shirts over the years, including Brian Godfrey, Brian Greenhalgh, Tony Morley, Tommy Thompson and of course most recently Sam Johnstone, Callum Robinson and Daniel Johnson.

    On This Date
Bob McNeill experienced the lows and highs of football during this two seasons at Deepdale in the 1980s. He joined us in December 1985 as we sank to the bottom of the league and needed to apply for re-election, but the very next season he was part of John McGrath’s side that gained promotion back to the third tier. Bob is 55 on 1st November.

David Eyres made his North End debut 20 years ago on Wednesday, in a 1-0 home defeat by Plymouth Argyle. Eyresy went on to become a firm fans’ favourite over the next three years, playing 130 times and scoring 22 goals.
Back in 1975, we eventually lost a seven goal thriller by 4-3 to Hereford United. Despite goals from Ray Treacy and Mick Baxter, together with a Tony Morley penalty, The Bulls gained their only win at Deepdale in their second visit, but we also won two good games in the noughties on this date, both 3-0, against Derby County and Hull City respectively!

This Wednesday night’s match official, for our first live TV game of the season, is also taking charge of his first PNE match of 2017/18.

The referee is Peter Bankes, who actually took charge of the corresponding fixture last season! That was his first of two North End games in 2016/17, also officiating the game at Elland Road in April.

Last season’s clash with the Villans was his third visit to Deepdale as a referee. His first was the 2014/15 season’s 3-2 home win over Port Vale in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and then in 2015/16 season he was here for the last game of 2015, when we defeated Hull City 1-0 just after Christmas.
This is his fourth year on the EFL referee’s list and his second year in the Select Group Two, having also taken charge of our win at Chesterfield in February 2015, when Joe Garner scored twice on his return from a period out injured.

The assistants on Wednesday evening will be Shaun Hudson and Matthew McGrath, with fellow select group two official Darren Bond acting as fourth official.

Well the better side won no excuses although the two we let in could have been avoided but the better side take their chances and make no mistake this Villa side were better. Six wins in the last eight for Bruce's men starting to move into a challenging position, also have what we lacked last night experience, Terry and Whelan established internationals at one time plus a bench load of international substitutes as well.
North End's first half performance was way off the pace although we did have chances two clearing headers by Villa defenders and a Barkuizen shot which went narrowly wide however we were already losing by that point. Villa started well and the makeshift defence struggled against the pace of Davis and Onomah, Maxwell had already pulled off a blinding save but from a corner Chester was allowed a free header inside the six yards box. (0-1)
We had a period were we actually got on top that is until Pearson's pass to Boyle was underhit, Onomah pounced sped towards the box squared the ball to Snodgrass 2 down and game virtually over. Misery all around compounded by two more injuries to defenders Woods and Earl both damaged medial ligaments. On came Gallagher and O'Connor to make his league bow. Personal view at the time we would do well to avoid a hammering however although without really looking like scoring we battled away and didn't throw in the towel. Only a Horgan shot troubled Johnstone in the Villa goal near the end, whilst Adomah missed a glorious chance from a break away. Villa sat deep in the second and dealt with any threat we may have without too much trouble.
One to forget onto Portman Road we go.

Honourable mentions to Boyle and the poppy less Alan Browne who did a sterling job at centre back in the second half. Nothing sinister about the lack of a poppy the shirt didn't have a GPS tracker in it.

Preston manager Alex Neil told BBC Radio Lancashire: "I've been in football since I was 16 and I've never known as many injuries at any club at one time.

"Both lads tonight are medial ligament injuries and there's nothing you can do about those injuries.

"The disappointing thing is we defended better with a patched up defence in the second half that we did in the first half."

Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce told BBC WM: "In the first half in particular, we were excellent.

"With the chances we've created, it could have been more comfortable, but overall it was a really decent performance.

"My two centre-backs and my goalkeeper were immaculate all night."

The lack of depth is beginning to show but it is very unfortunate.
