Having watched Matt Ritchie and Asmir Begovic a fair bit on the box lately I got to wondering who I wish we still had from what I've described as the "turbulent years".....this can include long term loans....Thorne for example - so see below and add to my deliberately short list.. Ritchie Henderson Ward Pearce
Michael Brown, if only for the hard graft and hard tackling that he brings to any team. James Dunne is a fearsome tackler, but too nice a bloke with it.
Begovic, with James as goalkeeping coach/assistant manager Ward Norris Tal Ben Haim... haha, just kidding I also quite liked Huskelep
Forgot about Husel....also Norris....just watched Pack play fairly well for Bristol City....we've had some decent players in our troubled times....and had to let way too many promising youngsters go.I'd have kept Rocha and Herm too....and Freddy P.
Apparently, Marlon Pack is playing well for Bristol City at the moment. Powerfully built player. Shame we released him to Cheltenham when we did.
One player who was always a joy to watch was Prosinecki a bit before all that but I thought I'd mention him anyway.
There have been many turbulent periods in Pompey's history!! What about David Kemp from a previous era when the club went through hard times?
Using players from a period between when we were relegated from the Premier Leauge to when we were relegated from League One. Goalkeepers - Begovic, Ashdown Defeders: Ward, Sowah, Pearce, Halford Midfield: Wilson, Ritchie, Pack, Williams, Cowan-Hall Forward: Ciftci, Futacs Also, it would have been good for the club to have kept Rocha around after we got relegated to League Two. He would have been a good influence.
Totally agree with Rocha - he was a class act - and that list of players is a decent squad - we had to let some very decent players go didn't we. I know looking backwards isn't healthy but it's good to remember those who've worn the shirt in recent times. Really rated Matty Taylor, Gary O'Neill and Prosniecki was a heck of a player.
One player I really hated to lose and could not understand why Harry Redknapp sold in the first place was Pedro Mendes.
A legend of Pompey. Pedro Miguel da Silva Mendes. Born in GuimarĂ£es, now where have I heard of that place before.
Always remember his quality but what always stands out was that horror elbow from Ben Thatcher - I felt at the time he should have been banned for life - extreme I know but I couldn't see anything mitigating in the assault at all.
Pedro Mendes was a legend. Him and David James are the only two players we signed in our spendthrift era which I have any affection for. Even if Jamo is a Seattle Seahawks fan! But he was sold in the summer of 2008, after we won the FA Cup but before the implosion began
