Wondering if anyone can shed some light on the Brentford situation with Will Grigg and his move from Walsall. The way I read it, his contract with Walsall expired, so he signed for Brentford. Now Brentford have been ordered to pay £325k plus other fees to Walsall. I'm confused as I thought if a club allowed a players contract to expire, other clubs are free to move in...? Does this mean that QPR looking for players whose contracts are up is actually not a cheap way to get players? Forgive me if this is obvious, but I don't get it.
Do they get something because they brought him through from the age of 17? Grigg will have let his contract run down on purpose (after a successful final year at Walsall) knowing that somebody would be in for him (maybe hoping it would be a bit higher up than Brentford - no offence.) Doesn't change the fact that it would have been Walsall that put the money and energy into his football education. They deserve compo.
Just found this. It answers the question. http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/other-football/walsall-fc/2013/08/13/walsall-fc-hit-by-will-grigg-cash-wait/
Players over the age of 23 are truly free, its tribunals for players under that but they are usually a rip off for the team losing a player, especially if hes going right to the top.
Thanks. Agree it is only fair Walsall should get something for all their input, and he is probably a bit gutted that no one better that Brentford were interested.
Not sure what you mean there but we have about 15 players out of contract next summer so theres going to be a huge turnaround. Zamora looks pretty much expired to me.
