We all assume that Adebola has been brought in to offer us something a little different, an experienced target man who can create things for other players, someone who might be brought on for the last 15-20 minutes of a game. A fair assumption to make, I certainly don't ever expect to see him play 90 minutes for us. Assuming that we don't sign any more strikers and that Fryatt and Simpson will be our starting pairing, then we'll now have Mclean, Adebola and Barmby on the bench, as players who could come on and change a game. Other than Percy, is there anyone else who wouldn't pick Barmby to come on, from those three options?
As all substitutions are made for different reasons and situations, its best to have a few options on the bench. Its hard not to single Barms out as the easy choice as he gives everything when he comes on, but Adebola is the type of player we missed last season. Its good to have a different option to pick from, its now upto NP to make the right decisions at the right time.
Of what I saw last season, I would bring Nicky Barmby on. Only seen Adebola play twice, so can't really comment on his 'ability'. Also depends on the scenario, the team we're playing and wether we are home or away. Still, I'd say Barmbs could make the most positive impact of the three
For some the biggest beef oabout Adebola is his age yet a 100% response thus far that Barmby would get their vote over the others.
Good question, that. In actual fact Barmby wasn't often brought on to play up front last season. More often than not he played wide right. So if we are talking about changing a game, and given Nige does not seem to play Nick up front, I would probably play Adebola to change a game. That being said, I don't ever enjoy watching the "Hoof it into the box for the big Barsteward" tactic, but needs be as needs must, I suppose.
If we're 0-1 down with 10 minutes left and we throw Adebola on and he scores from a Dudgeon "Delap" throw in, I wouldn't be bothered. Adebola could be part of the Dudgeon set piece jigsaw??
It's better than the "hoof it into the box for the little barsteward" tactic. Har har. I'd honestly say that out of those three, you'd have to pick Barmby. I think he's a ****, but out of those three he's probably the best bet.
I'd throw all three on. Barmby creates attacking situations, Adebola would cause aggro from attacking situations and McLean is good around the box if owt drops. Whiner.
This is probably best tested in the league cup, once we draw somebody decent. I'd say Barmby has the most influence on a game when brought on, but it depends on the opposition and the situation. If we were playing somebody like Stoke, then the more physical Adebola would be the choice. Against Doncaster, or a team who are a little more technical, use McLean's pace to get in behind the slower central defenders. I'd still like to see us sign a creative playmaker. My starting line up would be, once injuries are taken care of. ---------------Oxley ------------------- Rosenior ----Chester ----Hobbs -----Dudgeon Devitt ------- Evans ----- McKenna ---------Stewart ------------Fryatt --------- Simpson
Got to admit to being a Barmby fan. However we are short of thr target man option. We will never get one as good as Marlon King again so if Adebola is the best we can get at this pont in time then I support the signing.
Was gonna say its Jeff not Geoff! Adebolas been signed for a reason, we don't have a big target man, and need more experience in the team, I think he might prove to be more than a bit-part player this season.
Some games will need someone like Adebola. I think Nigel has spotted a weakness in the team and plugged the gap the in the most effective way in terms of cost and ability. Adebola is a certain type of player that we missed at times last season. We could have got a better younger version but if you are going to use them as a plan b you need to strike a balance between cost and ability. Adebola still has decent ability but probably not the stamina because of his age. If we only need to use a player for 20-30 minutes that isn't as much of an issue. In games were the opposition are pressing high up the pitch and forcing us to play long balls that there massive defenders are winning 9 times out of 10 then Adebola is a better option than anyone else.
