Kalas commands, praise for Wells, Diedhiou disappoints - Bristol City season player ratings
Every Robin scored for the last year on their Championship appearances and team contribution.

In order of minutes played in the league this season.
Here's how we're scoring the squad (bearing in mind that though team performances were often dire, many players have had okay campaigns):

    10
    - Championship player of the year, basically.
    9 - Outstanding campaign.
    8 - An excellent season.
    7 - A solid year of progress.
6 - Decent performances; some up, some down.
    5 - Average shifts really.
4 - Must do better next year.
    3 - A poor year, all considered.
    2 - A problem that needs resolution.
    1 - Let's not go there.

    Dan Bentley - 8
Could not have done a whole lot more as the 27-year-old enjoyed a huge year of progression and stood out in many, many games. City would have likely been relegated without him, and duly named player of the season.

    Tomas Kalas - 7
We're looking beyond his last three games here, where the skipper was honest that he had not been at his best. But overall it was 40 appearances - his most yet for the Robins - and a good campaign for the new club captain following Korey Smith's departure last summer. We've written in more detail about it here.

    Zak Vyner - 6

A really good breakthrough year for the 23-year-old swiss army knife of a defender, filling several gaps for the side. Now needs to nail down a position for good and gain regular playing time. A 3-5-2 formation may help him next year as the right-sided defender in the side.

    Jack Hunt - 4
Didn't do himself justice on the pitch this season and it would be a surprise if he was handed a new deal to remain beyond this year. Although in Hunt's defence he suits a 3-5-2 system more, and Bristol City moved away from that for much of the campaign as injuries hit. A leader in the dressing room but will that be enough come release of the Retained List?

    Nahki Wells - 6
Wells deserves credit for playing in EVERY SINGLE Championship game this season (10 from the bench, 36 started; no other player played more). It would be very easy to sit back and criticise the players for limp displays this season, but the reality is that it has been a non-stop slog of back-to-back matches in the most congested of campaigns.

No wonder soft tissue injuries are at all-time high levels. The Bermudian top-scored too with little service: Bristol City finished bottom of the league for Expected Goals in the Championship according to WyScout this season. That means, creating the fewest chances. Wells worked tirelessly across the year with little reward.

    Antoine Semenyo - 7
As a young talent playing his first proper, full season in the Championship, it must be regarded as fairly successful: 24 starts, 44 appearances in total, with two goals and four assists in the league, and another three scores in the two cup competitions. That interest from Crystal Palace is not for nothing, as Semenyo grabbed the Young Player of the Season award.

    Tommy Rowe - 5
Another player who could be sweating on a new deal, after an inconsistent year at left-back. His professionalism and commitment are not in doubt, but is Rowe a natural left-back and can he provide the dynamism down that flank needed to compete at Championship level? Defensively fairly sound - and there was that match-winning performance at home against Sheffield Wednesday. But it remains to be seen if that's enough to stay in BS3, as he reaches 33 in September.

    Adam Nagy - 5
Two goals, three assists across 25 league starts and six Championship appearances from the bench. We may be a tad harsh here on the Hungarian pickpocket-like midfielder but we do feel that with a settled side and system he could be one player that improves in the future. Plenty of box-to-box dashing this year and finished the year in some decent form: two assists and a goal in his last three, with a superb display against Luton at home.

    Famara Diedhiou - 4
Sorry Fam but you told us all last summer that you loved Bristol and wanted to stay and then ran down your contract. Not only that, but it wasn't a great year on the pitch: eight goals in 41 league appearances though, and the spearhead was regularly available.

Chris Martin was preferred under Dean Holden before the Senegalese striker came back into the fold. We feel that Diedhiou can do much better though. Hopefully that's not under Neil Warnock next year.
Sorry Fam but you told us all last summer that you loved Bristol and wanted to stay and then ran down your contract. Not only that, but it wasn't a great year on the pitch: eight goals in 41 league appearances though, and the spearhead was regularly available.

    Tyreeq Bakinson - 6
The central midfielder started the campaign as the surprise inclusion in Dean Holden's exciting 3-5-2, with Jamie Paterson and Andi Weimann flourishing behind Nahki Wells and Chris Martin as four wins on the trot came, before injuries hit. Bakinson has certainly shown he can play at this level, hit four great goals in the league - plus the goal of the season for us; Wycombe away - and looks to have a bright future.

    Chris Martin - 6
The free transfer striker began the season as a permanent fixture in Dean Holden's side, but a hamstring tear picked up in early February ended his campaign early. He netted just two goals in the league from 20 starts and six appearances from the bench, but he did grab five assists and another two goals in the cups for a healthy return. Could be an important figure next season if fitness allows.

    Adrian Mariappa - 5
Showed versatility as he covered at full-back on both sides plus at centre-back, appearing in 25 games after joining up with the Robins in the November international break. Another veteran free transfer and someone Nigel Pearson has worked with before, but we're not sure he's been convincing enough to earn a longer deal. But will Nige want to lose a trusted lieutenant?

    Han-Noah Massengo - 6
Another young player to emerge with surefire progress under his belt as he played in two games more than the season before, though fewer minutes. Needs to add something more to his game to really break beyond being a player with potential, but at just 19 there is plenty of time.

Energy and industry are in abundance, but goals and assists, or a few aggressive crunching tackles, would mark him out. Still, as one of the most used U20 players in the division along with Michael Olise of Reading, Harvey Elliott on loan at Blackburn and Joao Pedro of Watford, that's not bad company to keep.

    Kasey Palmer - 6
Spent the first half of the season at Swansea City on loan but arrived back in good form. At his best - Birmingham away, Swansea City away - he was a match winner, but there are still a few wrinkles to iron out, such as those handballs in the box.

If Nigel Pearson can add a bit more consistency to Palmer's game, through regular starts, then there could be an important midfield player there. Averages more successful tackles and dribbles per 90 minutes than any other senior City players, and only two make more more key passes. Getting him fitter could be key.

    Taylor Moore - 5
Another player disrupted by the flicking between formations and systems and personnel. Was a contender for man of the match at Stoke City as the Robins won 0-2 and flourished early on in that back three. But then was all at sea at Watford, made a vital error at home against Boro and an ankle injury ended things prematurely. Would likely have scored higher if he had played more.

    Jamie Paterson - 6
A pesky hip/groin injury disrupted his campaign, which looked promising as he played next to Andi Weimann, breaking from midfield. But three goals and two assists from just 15 league starts is not too bad output and he averaged more key passes - leading to a shot on goal - than any other City player per 90 minutes; though a lot were from set-pieces too.

    Callum O'Dowda - 5
The Irishman was undroppable for a very brief spell in the middle of the season. But around it were injuries, that calamitous tackle at the end of the Barnsley game, five appearances from the bench and two bad games home and away against Rotherham. We're still not entirely sure which is his best position.

    Steven Sessegnon - 4
Played much more then we expected him to at times, which perhaps was to top up his loan minutes to influence later assessments when further loans are weighed up. Showed good pace and tenacity at times but fialed to make the right-back spot his own and we wouldn't expect to see him return in 2021/22.

    Alfie Mawson - 6
Quite simply a class act (and by far the highest rated player statistically by Opta in-match statistics this campaign; see here). But Bristol City couldn't get him on the pitch enough. A tough year for the Cottager, though we would certainly love to see him return on the right deal.

    Henri Lansbury - 5
Another senior player arriving on a free transfer after a mutually agreed split from Aston Villa. Made 12 starts and four appearances from the bench and looked short of match fitness when arrived. No goals though one brilliant assist to set up Tommy Conway against Millwall.

    Jay Dasilva - 5
Just nine league starts for Dasilva who endured a tibia problem, curtailing his involvement. A big talent still and the 23-year-old could be a City star of 2021/22.

    Andi Weimann - 7
The senior attacker carved out a new role for himself that saw him pressing high while stationed just behind the front two, leading the charge forward, being a senior voice in the dressing room and netting twice in the first seven games of the Championship season. All before that cruel, cruel ACL injury picked up at home against Swansea City. Great to see him back in full training already.

    Chris Brunt - 5
The now Baggies youth coach's time in BS3 was ended by an unfortunate calf-injury sustained in the away game at Rotherham. Did a decent job coming on at the end of games to see out results but we were never convinced by him playing the anchorman role in midfield. Tremendously magnanimous gesture to agree to a mutual termination of his contract in the new year, due to his knock.

    Max O'Leary - 6
Three starts in the league for O'Leary who continues to show himself as an able deputy for Daniel Bentley. Including a clean sheet at Blackburn and a fine point earned at Barnsley.

    Tommy Conway - 6
Impressed with his sharp movement around the box and netting against Millwall for his first senior goal, while he was so close to another against Luton Town too. A talent.

    Danny Simpson - 5
We're certainly a long way from seeing the best of Danny Simpson, who arrived with eight games remaining, after leaving Huddersfield Town last summer. Three appearances and 20 minutes against Stoke City, with the highlight being a clean sheet against Nottingham Forest. Admitted himself recently that he needs a pre-season to reach full peak fitness.

    Sam Pearson - 5
A decent showing for the Wales U21 winger who needs to now work on his final ball, with plenty of tenacity and dogged chasing in his game already. Appears to have caught the eye of Pearson.

    Nathan Baker - 4
With his bone-rattling tackles and brute physicality the centre-back remains one of the most popular players in the squad. But just two starts wasn't good enough to score higher, even if it was due to unfortunate injuries.

    Ryley Towler - 6
Won the hearts of Bristolians when City ran out of left-sided options and the young player was called up and fielded out of position - and for a win - at Middlesbrough, following a chasing at Watford and a debut in the cup at Sheffield United. Swansea City was a game too far. One to keep an eye on.

    Alex Scott - 7
Just 17 and already taking set-pieces, completing dribbles and winning plenty of free-kicks. The England U18 midfielder looks similar in style to Jack Grealish and is one heck of a diamond to have been plucked from the shimmering grass of Guernsey.

    Hakeeb Adelakun - 6
Showed his best form yet in a Bristol City shirt as he was recalled from Hull City, ahead of a back problem. We expect his contract clause to be activated and to see another year of Haks and whether he can kick on.

    Liam Walsh - 4
Another player who has barely played this season, but sadly struck down by injury. Promised so much after that year at Coventry, but it wasn't to be.

    Owura Edwards - 6
The 20-year-old electric winger dazzled in patches on loan at Grimsby and then got his chance against Brentford. Another who has shown real potential.

    Saikou Janneh - 5
Got 79 minutes towards the end of the campaign after time at Newport, but largely played out of position out wide. There's certainly more to come from 'Saiks'.

    Joe Williams - 4
Another player to have sadly been on the sidelines for so much of this season. Played just 60 minutes in total in the league. Highly rated still though. The former Everton midfielder could become an important component of the West Country mens' engine room over the years to come.

    Sam Bell - 6
Just 33 minutes for Belly before his hamstring injury. Has impressed in training and the 18-year-old may be a rare young player who progresses straight to the senior group rather than going on loan elsewhere next year.

    Opi Edwards - 6
Already announced as released, despite being in line to start at Luton Town before he picked up a calf injury in training.

    Marley Watkins - 5
Went to Aberdeen on loan before returning and featuring against Birmingham City and Stoke for 28 minutes. Picked up a groin problem late in the campaign.

    Louis Britton - 7
A thumping header, yellow card and goal all within 18 minutes of action in the final game against Brentford. We loved how he pushed Pontus Jansson onto the post to try and grab the ball after his goal. Well in, Louis.

Some lousy scores there, some better than they deserve, no excuses bomb them out, no second chances, except the obvious.

Out of those OOC, Weimann would be first on my retained list.
I quite like Pato - lightweight but I think can still do a job for us (when fit - and getting the service).
Baker is really good, but injured a lot so maybe too fragile???
I honestly don't know much about Walsh but everyone raves about him so he must be ok.
Weimann for me is the only definite one to keep.

The actual article doesn't give names, so possibly click-bait?

Agree that at least Weimann looks like he gives a damn whenever he plays, which is more than can be said for a lot of them.
Patterson seems like a confidence player to me. When he's in the mood he's more than decent, but overall (from what I've seen of him), he's too inconsistent as are Bakinson and Palmer.
Aside from a bare handful, which include the kids, Bentley, Kalas, and possibly the latter 2 above I wouldn't care if the rest never wore the shirt again.

Weimann, Baker and Pato for me, the rest that are senior pros and OOC can go. Hard to say what the youngsters who are OOC are like as they came in when the teams confidence was rock bottom, but good to see a couple get on the scoresheet.

Raves? Not so sure but when he has been spotted he is a rare species for BCFC - Passes go to team mates very frequently. A skill missed since Pack left if the Manager feels its a desirable quality for his team. If his injury diagnosis is positive I would like to see him at Ashton Gate.

before i looked at he list i determined that 4 and above would be survivors!!! ...HAD A SH*** time of it!
10 - Championship player of the year, basically.
    1 - Let's not go there.

believe FOOTBALL Insider was chastised for their last load of dogs Trollope and now punting a figure of 11 told to find new clubs... i think anyone on here could come up with a list … when you run out of mainstream players add a few peripheral players from youngsters to make the numbers!

the question is how soon before a list is presented … is NIGE DOING THE CONTRACT WORK to see who will form his base … that needs to sorted before all else no good having a OoC as part of your plans when he wont sign! It all needs to be done properly now start with the foundations then finish with the roof … not just hope it all comes together
