After eight: Sunderland players set to lose out on bonuses By Mirror Football | Sunderland's players will be kicking themselves as they look set to miss out on a £250,000 cash windfall for failing to finish in the top-eight. The Black Cats finished 10th last season under Steve Bruce, which was enough to secure the *players a bonus for their seasonâs efforts. This term, however, the club decided to up the ante and challenged their *players to attain a top-eight finish in order to receive the lucrative bonus. The payment is divided up equally between the first-team squad. However, the decision to change the level of *attainment for bonus has not gone down too well with certain members of the squad. Sunderland, who go to Fulham today, are 11th and could well replicateâs last termâs *standing. But they would have to win their final two games and rely on a string of results going their way to finish eighth.
Let's be honest mate, 250k split between the entire first team squad is chicken feed to a Premier League footballer. Sad, but true.
This. I can't believe thats all it is, for a seasons work, you'd expect at least 3-4 times the average weekly wage.
Sad but true, mind you I get a little bonus, but I've never understood why someone on so much money would need an incentive to try their best!
agree with the above. this non-correlation with reality is also why the fines make me laugh. even when they are actually substantial to a footballer (tevez not getting a wage for months because he'd ****ed off to arentina, costing him millions in loss of earnings for example), it still doesn't matter as they are absolutely rolling in it. this is also why i can't fathom why someone would turn on a club that has shown them loyalty (in some cases brought them right through from a youth team) for an extra £10k a week, when their annual salary is in the millions. it's like my end of year financial bonus being a sandwich, or one celebratory beer.
Hoe about an incentive for me to attend the final few games of the season? Before anyone says five pound tickets I got nothing out of that and my ticket for next season is paid, in full with no refund if we peter out again.
Getting a bonus for doing something exceptional is not that unusual, but you could hardly call 10th, or 8th for that matter, exceptional. Exceptional for me is winning one of the cups or qualifying for the Europa league - any of those would give me so much joy as a fan that I would not begrudge any bonus beng paid. Anything else is them simply doing their job.
