Although I never saw Hewie, he is the first player on this thread that I can actually remember, even though it was only reading about him in reports of Scotland games when I was a nipper.
Never realised Jago played for us. I remember calling the QPR pitch a "Subbuteo pitch" when we played there.
I thought the name rang a bell, it's that betting scandal. It was huge, wasn't one of the Massive players (Swann) an England international?
It was a bit before my time. Must admit I was surprised when I began reading about it. There's quite a lot more detail, but I didn't want to make the profile overly long, or make it seem to focus just on that betting scandal. Those interested can look up Jimmy Gauld's page on Wiki, which details the Wednesday players involved as well. At the time it does look to have been quite a major scandal. I'd like to think that there was more to Jimmy Gauld than just a corrupt character. According to Colin Cameron Gauld was a very decent footballer during his fairly short stay at Charlton. To lose his playing career at just 29 to a bad leg break was a cruel blow. Can't condone what he did later, but he served his time for it, and to be forever banned from anything to do with football even after his release from jail is a full punishment. Once again the spectre of match fixing - or player behaviour fixing at any rate - is with us, due to the anything-goes betting culture which now prevails. Sadly it is almost inevitable that there will be more cases of corruption uncovered. In football as in international politics, when memories fade enough, history repeats itself. It is our most tragic failing that (despite every well meaning effort) we eventually forget.
There was also the series of matches in the late 70's I think, which had to be abandoned due to floodlights failure. It turned out to be due to a Chinese betting syndicate, and the sabotage was detected at a match at Charlton. I was at that game, it was a real pain.
Fryatt had more clubs than Tiger Woods (to recycle an old Tommy Docherty joke). We're getting close now to players some of us may even remember seeing.
