it seems to me to be getting out of hand. players such as teves and modric, amongst others, feel they have a right to say they want to leave their clubs to join another and it must be allowed. contracts don't mean much even if they have 2-3 or more years left on them. "you can't keep an unhappy player" is the usual cry when someone wants to leave but they wer'nt unhappy when they signed that 5 year contract at £150 grand a month. i hope city hold out on teves and don't sell him. its not just these two players at it but theres loads at it. if you signed a contract then honour it!
Agreed. If you know you will probably move to another club in a year or two, don't sign a 5 year contract! Greed has taken over football unfortunately.
In as much a conscoience effort to not pull a "Gillett" I hope one day it doesn't come down to what we face here in the states...... As of right now the only professional sports that will be on TV or playing at all will be Baseball, Tennis, Hockey, and Soccer. The NBA and NFL players union have gone on strike and NFL is locked out. I am not sure how this would happen in the football world, but I hope nothing like this ever comes up. Would really be a sad day.
The thing is, teams still make their money, the board don't care because they still get their paycheques and the FA don't care for the same reason, neither do FIFA.
The economic mess that we are in is not just a UK thing. Across Europe (even in Germany) the financial climate is very troubling indeed. Things are no better in the USA -they may even be worse. All of the clubs are now truly commercial enterprizes. Their player investments are very important to them. Therefore I predict that we will see more of the Moric style "you are going nowhere" stances taken by clubs.
Dubai are doing pretty well in the recession, I seen a program hosted by Piers Morgan () about a year ago, it revealed how a guy from the UK went there and became a millionaire within a few years. As its a small place your able to quickly get the right contacts
I think the respect and sort of fear of managers has gone. Example, Fergie and Kenny. Players may not like them, but they'll respect them and do what they're told. Some players are just able to walk all over the managers. The Chelsea players are in this enviroment because they know they'll probably be around longer than the manager.
I don't want to make this too serious but there are many worried rich people across the Middle East. I don't know if we are at, or have passed Peak Oil - their reserves are declining. Add to that the fact that Europe and now the US are taking the search for alternative power sources far more seriously and the long term prospects are under serious threat. Apart from that places like Dubai have money and not much else. The global fiancial markets are in a very precarious state. None of us understand what the effects of a Greek default would have upon it - especially if it is follwed by Ireland, Portugal and the 'biggies' Spain and Italy- but it would collapse.
To be fair to Tevez he is living away from his family and two young daughters. If he goes abroad and they come live with him then you can't judge him and say he's being greedy. Anyone in his position would do the same thnig surely? but coming from their point of view, why can't they say they want to move to another club? Why would Modric show any loyalty to Spurs? He's not from North London - probably hadn't heard of them until they offered him a load of money. This isn't a dig at Spurs either just using that as an example as the original poster has. Also if clubs don't want to sell then they don't have to, no one is forcing them to. Tell them they are staying and seeing out the contract. If they kick up a fuss, fine them. If they go on strike, sue them for breach of contract. Football contracts don't have a notice period like most of us, they can't just work their 1 month notice and then move to another company like we can. They have to stay with that employer. Ok, they get paid stupid money but that isn't their fault. If you signed a contract with your Company who gave you 5 years guaranteed employment and then another company offered you a job with 50% more pay, would you not be desperate to leave? We can keep working until we are 60. Footballers get what about 15 years playing time? Why not try and make as much money as they can in that time to secure their future. Rant over
When ALL of the clubs face serious fiancial problems they will be far more willing to tell players that they will honour their contracts.
makes more sense now. Great point. speaking of your point biscan, Zayatte of hull city wanted to go back to france because of family reasons, so hull said 'fair enough, away you go' Soon after, to everyone's surprise, he moved to play in Turkey. That left us all scratching our heads.
if we do the math on tevez; 200k per week over 5 years = 52million. thats before tax of course. the point is this guy gets that BEFORE bonuses, merchandising, signing on fee etc. 52million. if you sign a contract surely to god you discuss the matter with the family before hand. 5 years = 5 years IMO. tevez and the clown at qpr ought to think baout what a commitment is cos to be quite frank they are only hurting themselves in the end. sur ego chase the cash.... BUT HOW THE HELL WILL YOU SPEND IT ALL!!!! if you are this mercenary that the missus won't sit inthe alp of luxury with private tutors for the kids for 5 years then i don't think any TOP club will look at these guys and so while they get the cash they'll have very little other than that to be remembered by. in the end tarbatt or however you spell his name, tevez etc will not win so many major honurs to be remembered. i simply refuse to beleive that mr tevez can't get his family situated in pure luxury with the bloody mother in law if required.... bascially i think that while cheslea were wrong to pursue a certain player in the courts i do feel that its high time a player gets ruined in court.... i 'd be quite happy to see a club take a plyer to court over his breach of contract, stop paying him and block him playing anywhere else and set a precedence over contract law. on modric... he's trying to be careful to not give spurs an excuse but again for me he signed a contract. he should be honouring it. i have to say that at least michael ballack did what he said he would. he gave leverkusen his time, then bayern then chelsea, every club knew where they stood. he moved each time on a free. in a way he's the most honest player i've seen in a long time. if you're doing everything for a player like tevez, eg letting him go back home during the season (daughter was very sick) leetting him away with numerous interviews stating he wanted to go and manchester was horrible...i think 200k per week demands a bit of loyalty
one other point. fabreags... arsenal put an 6 or 8 year contract in fornt of him and at 18 it was too much he was badly advised so in his case i think while he's spoken out a bit too much i think this club really put it over on the player here. stilll though the ONLY complaint he can have is they are not winning trophies compared to his side he left in the first place. in the end is that enough reason to break a contract?
