Early days to be thinking about this I know. But usually by this stage of the Season one or two contenders have emerged(OK over the last couple of Seasons only one serious contender!). Given what an abysmal year we're having and the fact that very few are anywhere near covering themselves in glory should the Club abandon the award this Term??! I am of course discounting the possibility of one of our strikers going on an unprecedented run of back to back hat tricks to pull us out of the mire.If that were to happen they'd deserve a statue!
A mate asked me this recently, and I had no idea how to respond. Out of this sorry lot, maybe Matthew Pennington? I don't think any of our attacking players can realistically expect to win this award, as we've been toothless in so many games and we've struggled to score and create. Bart cannot claim the award again this year and Gerken hasn't been consistent enough. That leaves the defence and, while we've shipped a lot of goals, Pennington has been our best defender of the lot. I'm sure he'll be back at a Championship club targeting promotion next season. I wouldn't be surprised if Lambert nominates the Ipswich Town supporters in the latest PR move.
Stretchy and Nuggets, they were the only two names that came to my mind as being anywhere near to consideration.
If Collins continues his decent form, builds on his presence and his wider influence in the team, (finally, a centre-back who talks to the players around him!), then he'd possibly be a contender? But I don't like the idea of giving Player of the Year to somebody who's only been here for half of it.
Pennington is the outstanding candidate. Honourable mention for Freddie Sears who has kept plugging away and to Chalobah for showing up every week.
I don’t think so. Not unless that impact means that we go on some kind of run of wins or at least the occasional clean sheet. I think credit has to go to the ones who’ve had to endure the whole season and kept giving their all.
This won't happen, and I doubt he'll play for us again, but did Knudsen do an awful lot wrong when he did play? By all means shoot down - seen so little this season, but what I have seen he didn't do anything glaringly bad.
I thought he did alright. I think he has a lot more to give than he's shown this season, especially getting forward. But he's not had the license to do that. Defensively he has not covered himself in glory but most of the problems have been down the other side and the centre. Kenlock got called out for the goal last week but he's not done a lot wrong, the centre back's not come across to cover and that's why we've conceded. That left back berth would have been one of the few I'd have been comfortable to leave as is and focus more on fixing the real weak areas. I'm not interested in him wanting to move on or the agent. I don't blame him at all.
Yeah, but some are more **** than others!Perhaps it should be renamed for one season only “Least **** Player of the Year”
