Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone has been named Player of the Year at the Supportersâ Player of the Year Evening. The stopper, who moved to the Stadium of Light just last summer from Arsenal, has made 24 league appearances for Black Cats this term, keeping eight clean-sheets. He was also instrumental in the teamâs memorable Capital One Cup run, where his heroics between the sticks helped Sunderland beat Manchester United 2-1 on penalties at Old Trafford. Mannone picked up the accolade alongside Fabio Borini, who was named Young Player of the Year. The 23 year-old received the gong after fruitful season on loan from Liverpool, that has seen the Italian notch seven goals for Sunderland. His first was the match-winner in the Wear-Tyne derby back in October and his most recent strike from the spot at Stamford Bridge; securing a vital three points for Gus Poyetâs side. The pair picked up their awards â based on votes cast by SAFC supportersâ branches all over the country â at a special presentation night at the Stadium of Light.
