On the FLS last night it stated that the award was given today?.

They said Lallana is back with a brace the day before the awards.

So is it just announced? Or is there a football league dinner or something?

Haven't seen it on OS or anything...

Football League Awards Dinner is tonight. Sibley is tweeting from it. Fully expect Lambert to pick up the award.

I'd be very surprised if Lambert didn't win it, so I'm more interestd in who will get into team of the season.

Apt timing of the event, as Saints have no match until next Saturday, so whichever player receives it [can't believe it won't be a Saints player] should be able to enjoy it.

If Hooiveld's not in the team of the season, it's a joke.

I think Lallana will sneak it from Lambert. Whittingham is a quality player but this year hasn't really shown his qualities. Agree, Hooiveld should be in team of the season. My outsider for Team of the Year would be Schneiderlin.

I'm not sure how you can say that. Yes we've seen just how great he's for us he's been, but who is to say that other CBs for other teams haven't been equally as good, if not better? Both of Hull's CBs for example often get rave reviews, and are tipted for PL football football in the near future, with or without Hull. And Hull's defensive record would certainly suggest that they're decent.

Then explain how Saints managed to be at the top of the league without Hooiveld's help..? Dear, oh dear, a very short memory indeed, St_Lambden.

Faye of west ham should be in the team of the year, he is quality. I'm guessing readings CBs will be likely as well due to their record, although to be honest I haven't seen many of their games. Hooiveld definitely deserves a mention though, he has been ridiculously consistent and chipped in with some vital goals.

To be honest though, I think these awards are handed out far too early. Surely all of these types of things should be decided by who steps up and makes it count in the business end of the season?

I think the clue is in the title. Player of the YEAR. There are other Player of the Season awards, and granted, sometimes they come along a tad too early.

Even though they have the word "year" in them, I think you'll find that these are the player of the season awards.

Haha I feel properly stupid now.

To be fair though, it just solidifies my point that this award is a bit of a waste of time. Surely a "year" award would have to include the last half of last season? Which would surely include the players that got Norwich, QPR and Swansea promoted. And begs the question what is the point in yearly awards when football is determined in seasons?

Not to put a downer on Lambert and Lallana's nominations as they have been fantastic and deserve recognition of some sort

Were they once referred to as Player of the Season Awards, because I remember a PotS award..?

    Possibly.

There is a Fans Player of the Season award later in the season. Rickie won that in 2010 in L1, when Beckford won this Player of the Year version of it that same season.

Been doing a little looking back, and you're quite right, it is nearly all 'Year' based awards. Now, is it from January-to-January based, or August-to-May..? In truth, it would make more sense to be the former.

Neither explain why the ceremony is in March though. I thought that this was an award voted for by the managers/players of the clubs in that division. That wouldn't work if it was Jan - Jan would it?

I'm certain that it's an August - May award, it's just strange that they have it so early. Likewise in the PL - had the awards been at the end of the season, I'm sure Bale wouldn't have won the players player pf the season last season. I remember Michael Owen tweeting that they had to cast their votes in January. January!

Its ridiculous. What if Morgan scores 16 goals like the goal machine he is and inspires us to win the title? He wont get an award!
