Well done Rovers https://www.bristolrovers.co.uk/news/2018/june/roverscommittoreducingsingleuseplastic/ In what is believed to be a first in the EFL, Bristol Rovers is targeting being totally free of single-use plastic before the upcoming campaign gets under way in August and has set out a strategic plan to incorporate a diverse range of biodegradable alternatives for supporters to use on a match day. Recent media attention surrounding the consequences of single-use plastics to the wider environment has brought the subject to the forefront of public debate, with a number of corporations and businesses aiming to reduce the amount of plastic waste they use - with football clubs, in particular, asked to evaluate their plastic consumption. In order to meet our plastic-free target, Rovers has teamed up with Sydna Distribution Limited, who specialise in supplying biodegradable and compostable catering disposables - which will be installed at the various kiosks and eateries around the Mem. The items supplied by Sydna will be PLA manufactured, which is a bioplastic and is capable of breaking down in a matter of weeks once it arrives at landfill. Both the cups and burger trays that supporters will see around the ground on a match day will be 100% compostable. In addition, the straws that will be used will either be 100% paper or PLA manufactured. Speaking about the campaign to ensure Rovers becomes plastic free, Commercial Director, Tom Gorringe added, "As a football club, we understand that we play an integral part in the local community, but also have a responsibility to do our bit to further help the environment. "The impact that plastics are having on our society cannot be ignored and although our steps are small, we feel that this is an important change as part of a wider switch in a mainstream society moving forward. “The switch to more environmentally friendly bags in our shop and PLA Biodegradable glasses in our bars (not to mention other areas across the stadium) hopefully will fill our supporters with the comfort that they can continue to support the club in the way they have been, whilst reducing the negative impact on the environment. “We would like to thank our suppliers that have highlighted this issue to us and allowed us to facilitate the change, in particular, Sydna Distribution Limited who have enabled us to come up with environmentally friendly alternatives to the products that we are required to distribute on a match day."
