I was reading in a magazine that in Brazil âworldiesâ (or world class goals) are called âPlaque Goalsâ. Basically when it happens the owner/club erects a plaque that goes on the wall of one of the stands to commemorate the goal. It would have the players name, the date, the opponents etc. Maybe this is something we could do? Perhaps a short list could be prepared by the club, with voting forms inside the last home programme â the fans could then decide the Plaque Goal for that season. Alternatively make it goals in a calendar year, with voting on the first home league game in January. I know itâs a small idea, but itâs a chance to get fans and players interested (players may like to see their name preserved for ever) â it also builds a historic record over time. To begin with we could even go back over time to build a bit of history (e,g. my vote last year would be for JETâs goal against Rovers)
I like that idea! My personal all time goal would be Christian Roberts winner against Hartlepool.. Tony Thorpes winner against the sags would deserve a plaque too.. They're looking for ideas for the ground now, send them an Email..
Its a really good idea and it was something fans started doing with Murrays goal at Cardiff. There was also to be Cheesley at Arsenal the club didnt seem that interested in it unless it made money instantly and thought it was a hassle. The idea is not dead as fans may do this on pubs instead.
So many to choose from. How about Coventry away 1977? Or Leeds away 1973. A section with famous league victories over the current big clubs. Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea just to remind ourselves that we can become a big club again that should fear no-one at Ashton Gate!
Scott Murray's chip against Wycombe in the LDV my favourite - I think he said it was his as well What are the odds on the club taking up the suggestion?
Dont recall any victories against Chelsea Cidered, did we do that ? My vote goes for Jimmy Mann's rising slam-dunk that tore past the England goalkeeper from 40 yards. 2&3 goes to Keith Fear's skilful lob preceded by the superb work of Gerry Gow and Maynard's Brazilian moment of magic at Loftus Road
FA Cup 1990 or 91 with Gavin, Turner and Taylor causing havoc. But we have only beaten them once at Ashton Gate in league in my lifetime. April 1979 won 3-1. Chelsea's only win at Ashton Gate is in FA Cup in 1949. Never won a league game at Ashton Gate, but neither have we ever won in league at Stamford Bridge. Similar record with Man City. They have never won a league game at Ashton Gate, only a League Cup tie in 2007. We have won twice at Man City in the league way back in 1906 and 1911. Yes I know that if we played them in the league now (Premiership) we'd get slaughtered but it's still a proud record that neither have ever won at City.
Following up the previous post, we are in a rather rare situation this season with regard to history against the clubs we will play. Every club has it's bogey teams, against whom they never do well. For City it's clubs like Wolves for instance. In League One this season only Sheff Utd and Bradford City could be termed as bogey teams. They are the only two clubs that we will play who have recorded more wins against us than we have against them, home and away. There are one or two like Fleetwood and Burton who we've never played. But if one believes in history repeating itself and the existence of bogey teams, then we should have a very very very good season.
Technically a plaque goal would only be those scored at Ashton Gate If anyone else likes the idea please feel free to lobby the club (I'm not precious about it being my idea)
