Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli is sure that Sebastian Vettel would have been able to make the end of the Monaco Grand Prix without suffering tyre failure. The World Champion, holding off Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button, successfully defended on a worn set of Super Softs after a pit lane error resulted in a one-stop strategy.

“Monaco was a fantastic race, with three drivers battling closely for the win even though they were using three very different strategies,” recalls Paul Hembery, Motorsport Director for Pirelli, with drivers having finally fitted new tyres following the red flag intervention for Vitaly Petrov’s accident.

“From the data we can see that Sebastian Vettel’s tyres would have gone the distance if he had continued to drive on them in the same way that he had been doing up to the red flag period.

“This means that he could have covered 62 laps, the equivalent of more than 200 kilometres (125 miles), on the PZero Yellow (Super Soft) tyre, with an extremely close finish.”

Im sure they would. I dont think Red Bull would off been that suicidal to keep him out if they new the tyres were really bad.

But I would of liked to see a Mansell/Senna fight between him and Alonso

I didn't think tyre failure was ever mentioned as a possibility, was it? It was more about them falling off the cliff.

"Sebastian Vettel’s tyres would have gone the distance if he had continued to drive on them in the same way that he had been doing up to the red flag period"

Does that mean his performance wouldn't have fallen off?

Of course he'd have made it to the finish - BUT with 2 really energetic guys hassling him all over the place. Pretty good chance one of them would have got by - even with rearranged bodywork.

After the way he defended in Spain I think he would've hung on, but alas, we'll never know...
