Anyone seen this rumour: I hope we don't do what we have done so many times before and sold players too soon. Liverpool are thought to be monitoring the progress of Norwich winger Anthony Pilkington with a view to making a move for the player in January. Pilkington has caught the eye this season after his summer move from Huddersfield and has proved his ability to overcome the jump from League One to Premier League football and has emerged as one of Norwichâs key players in their first season back in Englandâs top tier of football and this performances has seen the player linked with a move to Liverpool, a massive step up for the player that spent time in the Blackburn Rover and Manchester United youth squads. Pilkington is thought to be valued by the Norfolk club in the region of £5 million and many pundits believe that would be a shrewd piece of business for a player that will just get better.
not surprised by this rumour - if he was sold it would undermine our policy of building for the future, n'est pas?
It certainly would and I think undermine the main goal of survival this season. I'm sure Pilks will attract more attention, especially if he continues to improve over the course of the season.
didn't he sign a three year deal? liverpool can watch him as much as they like - lambert won't sell him in january. there is a possibility he might leave for an extremely tidy profit in the summer but during this season - no chance! shows what a good deal we got though. £1.75m, three months later he's attracting interest at £5m+. proof this club knows what its doing these days
£5mil, ha no way! Im sorry but tbh if he takes a look at there squad theres only one place he would be playing and thats in the reserves or keep the bench nice and toasty. Im not saying hes terrible or not good good enough but in the real world if he was to leave for them theres only one way his career would go and thats downwards like so many others who thought they would be better off leaving. As mcnally has stated we are officially a buying club now, so we arent going to be held to ransom over one of our star players cos were "little old norwich"
Why don't we get together and start a website devoted to football rumours? We can each adopt a team and contribute one or more new rumours for "our" team every day. We'd surely make a mint from advertising and all be able to retire.
Agree with you there Supers. Lambert will have final say on any transfer dealings but this day has been coming. When you are a big fish in a little pond as we were two years ago we had control over our destiny. Over the last 18 months our squad has been overhauled and built around lower league players who have been moulded into potential superstars. Nobody else had the bravery or desire to snap these players up when they were bargain basement value. Once they are proven top flight performers it is just a matter of time before the bigwigs sit up and take notice. What it will come down to is will Lambo have the desire to keep rebuilding time and again? Do you keep a player against his wishes? Do you cash in and give yourself the chance to buy 2 or 3 players for the sake of selling one? I would argue that Lambo would have no problem overhauling our squad again and again as he has already done so 3 times in less than 3 seasons! I have no problem cashing in as long as that money is guaranteed to be reinvested in other players but agree with Supers that the earliest that will happen is in the Summer.
I think the whole point is, everybody has a price! If one of the big boys comes in throwing money like it's going out of fashion, we are going to sell! As Chris says above, we know we have the management team in place to fill any holes that appear, without doing harm to the team! However, we also know that none of our starlets are going to be given away! We'll have enough for a replacement, and enough left over for a healthy profit!
It's a credit to Pilkington and to the club. Whether it is true or not. Hopefully he will keep his feet on the ground and just continue to play well for us.
If he is going in January the prices tend to be inflated. I think with 2 and a half years still on his contract, we could be looking at a Dean Ashton sized transfer fee. Still think he'll see out the season though.
Trouble is when that happens, everyone knows how much we have to spend. Suddenly an average player is being priced at over inflated prices. As has been mentioned earlier, would PL want or have the patience to rebuild over again?
Be interesting to know what kind of sell-on clause Huddersfield put in when we signed him, if it's something like 20% then it selling him for £5m would make no sense at all and I personally can't see any mileage in this at all unless the numbers get silly - and with Liverpool's recent track record that's quite likely I guess!
Unless he's unsettled here, I would be astonished if he was going anywhere. If we got a 'silly money' offer for any player, then of course it would be likely the club would cash in. But if were talking about 'normal' transfer proceedings, I can't see it.
