Probably won't be a regular starter just yet but with O'Shea gone and Rio likely to spend a lot of time in the treatment room Jones will get games. A lot depends on how well he can compete with Smalling. I wouldn't select him for an FF team tho, that's a gamble

Lol! Actually, on that note Skylarker, do you reckon Kelly will play many games this year? I've got him in my FF team on the basis that Agger and Aurelio probably won't play too much and he's cheap!

CJS I would consider Smalling if I were you - likely to cover for Rio in most of the smaller matches to avoid an injury to the old crock! And the smaller matches are the ones we are most likely to get clean sheets in too. If he doesn't play the first few games you can always switch him for whoever does!

i was kind of hoping you be telling me that you will be using jones as a midfielder. so when you keep clean sheets he will still score clean defender points but chance of getting goals and assists from midfield. oh well. thanks again.

We may well do. But the only bloke who knows that for sure doesn't visit these boards all that often...

Jones will not play, unless both vidic and rio are injured, which is likely :p

I think him and smalling will get there run outs in europe and cup games

I doubt he will be a regular this coming season but think Fergie will give him plenty of games in the domestic cup's.

He played at right back last night so he could be playing there more often. Central midfield is also touted for Jones as well. Wouldn't surprise me if Jones, Smalling and Evans all played at full back at times to one, get game time and keep match fit and two, increase their versatility and get them comfortable in other positions just to add another string to their bow's.

I agree - SAF seems to like players who can play both CB and RB / LB (Brown, O'Shea, Berg and Silvestre are some examples). Helps ensure we don't have a defensive crisis and don't get caught short in key positions. Well, not too often anyway!

I can imagine Smalling playing a bigger role this season after he took to the squad so fantastically last season. I'd imagine that Jones would fill a similar role to Smalling last season, as a backup when others are injured or tired, possibly a choice for the group stages of the Champions League or for the league games before.

At the moment ive got Kelly in my FF team. Kenny loves Kelly and he was definitely our best performer before his injury. If Kelly plays again as RB (naturally a CB) he will get a fair few assists as he loves a good traditional burst down the line.

I should imagine Kelly will be a big part of Kenny's plans next season and i see him being a regular starter. However, if we sign a new left back then it could be a concern. Johnson may get put back as right back leaving Kelly to be our first sub for any defensive issues.

I am keeping a close eye on this, as i'll probably swap Kelly in my FF team if we do sign a LB. I'll then see how the first few games pan out and transfer him in if he is a reg starter <ok>

You're right about Aurelio (such a shame as he is an excellent LB) and also Agger (when fit i believe one of our best players). They will both end up having frustrating seasons due to slight niggles. Although out of the 2 i would think Agger will play more games.

I believe Jones will justify the decision of the board of giving him the no. 2 jersey.
    Go reds go.
