so phil jones to united for what could be worth 17 million.

    why?

we're not in desperate need of a centre back. where as we are in desperate need of a goalkeeper, a couple of central midfielders and possibly even a left winger.

so why the **** have we gone and blown nearly 20 million on jones? the prices are becoming ridiculous. he's played 34 league games in his career, not even a full seasons worth!

that 17 million could be put to such better use. the same way the 7 million for bebe was pissed up the wall.

fix the positions that are needed to be fixed please fergie! :headbang:

I have no idea why we went for another defender, We have Vidic Ferdinhand Smalling and Evans which is adequate enough cover.

I have a feeling we will stick with the likes of Gibson in midfield for amother year.

I think he's a class player. When you consider that Brown will probably be leaving and Rio particularly and Vidic to a lesser degree have a tendency to get injured, it's a good move. Also, Jones has played plenty of games in midfield for Blackburn and looked solid there. He also fits in with the homegrown rule.

i agree corbo, i have a feeling it'll be another summer where we strengthen everywhere except where we most need it.

merry, i hope to god we're not signing him with the intention of playing him in midfield. that really will depress me.

Or it's Fergie's tactics to Stop Arsenal getting a decent CB, so they will continue to fail!:)

I'm happy with the intent being shown to spend money... I'm sure Fergie had his partnership with Smalling for the U21s in mind when he bought him.

But Young is not enough for this midfield.
I pray that another Midfielder is coming in.

    Anderson is not the answer.

We'll sign a keeper, either De Gea or Stekelenburg will be confirmed soon, most likely De Gea once the U21 tournament finishes. We just need a top class midfielder, buying Jones doesn't rule that out. Plus we may loose Brown and Evans so Jones could be very usefull cover this season and a good long partner for Smalling.

not when he's not being given a chance.

i rate him highly, and he's adding goals to his game. fergie doesnt seem to trust him though. he still insists on playing someone whos spent the last 20 years out on the wing to be our creative force in the centre of midfield.

young..good player, don't think he'll make any difference at all against the barca's of this world though.

Well it could turn out a good deal I guess, If we sell Evans for around 8m ish?
I think we will get a keeper, and hopefully that last signing would be a CM.

I think the sigining of jones means we wont get young.

If we do get young, I can't really seeing us getting a CM, which is the position we need to strengthen most.

    Liverpool fan in peace,

Jones should be a good signing for you; wish we had signed him!

But like the price for Henderson, both seem too high!

Although Jones won't get ahead of Vidic or Ferdinand now, having the choice of a back 2 including Vidic, Smalling and Jones in the future will be a very good one for you!

yup, youre spot IMO.another year struggling along due to players in CM giving hugely substandard performances.unless fletcher returns to his form of 09/10 and anderson finally starts to develop properly i can see next year being as dicey as this year and last.

after the lesson given by barca midfield in the final..and then fergie saying that he'll look to change things up i cant for the life of me see a centre midfielder not being brought in. even more so with scholes retirement.

not forgetting hargreaves leaving.people seem to assume that because he was gone for so long,we will never fill that void again, but we are genuinely 2 CMs down this summer and fergie is looking at every position except the one we need looked at if the tabs are correct.

i have this awful gut feeling fergie is going to stubbornly ignore what everyone is saying and buy young,de gea, jones and a young striker to replace berbatov.hope so very much im wrong but that seems to be the way hes going right now.

I know Anderson needs a chance - but I don't want him as our main Centre mid this season....
I would buy a centre mid and ship Gibson to give Anderson more games.

Alot of the time it's the wages that cause a stumbling block...
But 4-5 players should be leaving this summer.
Scholes, Van Der Sar and Hargreaves were probably on quite big wages.

Jones will earn less than Brown and Evans both currently earn i'm sure. Assuming they're off.
So there should plenty of money to spend on wages.

I just hope we'll see a Centre mid brought in.
Cleverley is not the answer either.

All the valuations seem up the wazoo this summer. £20 million for Henderson, £7-8 million for N'Gog, £17 million for Jones and, if the rumours are to be believed, £6 million for Gibson, £6 million for Brown, £4 million for Kusczak, and £8 million for Evans!

I think SAF is biding his time when looking for a CM. Out of the three main targets mentioned most in the media, Sneijder, De Rossi and Modric, there are no other clubs that seem to be prioritising them. De Rossi is still in contract negotiations, so if they fall through we could snap him up for around £15 million. Sneijder seems to be happy either to stay at Inter or come to us - he's given no indications he's going to force a move. So that one could be down to whether we can do some form of swap deal with Nani. Finally Modric seems to be waiting to see what Spurs do, and if they show signs of building a team that will get back into the CL, before deciding whether or not he wants out. I reckon if we do get one of those three we will get them after the holiday period, i.e. in late July or even August.

I think Jones is a great buy, bags of potential. Like others, I am concerned about the cm position and don't think that we will address this through the purchase of anyone in particular this season. It's a difficult decision as we have some great youth coming through and so a top buy could hamper the first team chances of Pogba and Tunnicliffe etc longer term.
