Very sad news Feel for the bowler who has to live with that no intention to hurt injur or kill anyone just playing a game
The trouble with wearing a helmet is it does give the batsman an unwarranted sense of security. They will pay at head shots that usually you leave. Then the commercial guys say, we can't see your face, we will design something more TV friendly. The helmet becomes a fashion statement rather than PPE. What a tragedy.
A crazy story - was this the first time a players died during a match? What makes it worse is the bowler is his good mate. He's now having counselling according to BBC breakfast.
Reminded me of the horrific injury suffered by Mike Gatting in the 80s. Facing the full might of the famous Windies attack of the time...without a helmet....Gatt took one straight in the face. Players threw up on the square after spotting pieces of Gatting's nose bone embedded in the cricket ball. Luckily Gatt has always been a fat, ugly bugger, so his looks were not affected. Terrible news about Hughes. It seems the ball hit him between the top of the neck and the base of his skull, literally bursting the main blood artery to his brain.
I just saw the footage of it. He doesn't actually collapse right away, he takes a few steps and just collapses. Really, really horrible stuff.
I watched the Michael Clarke interview on Sky and it really hit home what had happened. I really feel for Phil Hughes Family and Friends, but also to the poor bowler and his family. How you would get over that, i don't know.
