I have a rescue dog, she is a lovely Pincer/Sausage cross. We believe she is around 5 years of age, it's the first time I have had a pet, I wish I had got one years ago.
Having retired, I am looking to get a dog. Dogs bring structure to your life and are good company, unlike the missus. I have registered my details with three dog rescue charities but I am finding their paperwork & demands very frustrating.
Not wishing to alarm you , but I’ve just been watching Brazilian News on satellite. The main story was about a gringo on a motorbike clutching a poor pooch, and yelling “tell Elfs I want 50,000 pesos” as he disappeared across the border ?
Wish I could own a dog, not allowed where I'm renting. I used to take a friend's dog for a walk once a week, after they became too poorly to get out to the park with him. Other neighbours walked him on other days of the week. Buster was the doggy's name. He was quite small, a mongrel similar looking to a beagle but with smaller ears. Maybe like a Jack Russell. He loved chasing pigeons and being naughty. Never barked though. Totally loyal to his owner, would stay at their bedside when they became very ill. I was very upset one day when I heard Buster had passed away. He was quite old. But he loved life so much. A really happy soul.
You can see my dog in the avatar- she is amazing. Has the most happiest temperament, loving and loyal. She will be in a pub and people queue to pet her. She can work out who in the pub will give her treats immediately and who is a a wrong un. Makes me get up and enjoy life much more than any of the ex wives. Not a rescue dog but as a novice owner I wanted a puppy to train up. Had her now for 4 years and every day she makes fun. Would not give her up for the world.
I know someone who started up a dog sitting business, and it is extremely lucrative. Many people bought dogs for the first time during lockdown, and have struggled to cope / lost interest, and have turned to others for help. There are no bad dogs in this world, only a minority of bad dog owners.
I've got an eleven-year-old pug. I rescued her from a puppy farm and a life of utter misery. It's one of the best things I've ever done. She is loyal, loving and utterly gorgeous. I'd be lost without her.
I’ve got two dogs (terriers) the kennels cost a fortune I’m lucky to have my son look after them when I go away
Last time I had a dog Charlton were playing at Selhurst. Some games I used to take him on the sparsely populated terraces.
The only advice I would give to anyone getting a dog is not to think to deeply into it. Dogs are far too individual to be characterised. I bought every book, Researched on line, went to obedience classes (sometimes with the dog) and learned nothing. just a ball, a few treats and silly play and it’s yours forever.
This is true - put 100 dogs in a room and you will get 100 different personalities. I looked after a large wolfhound for a few days last summer - the dog was a complete delight & we soon formed a bond when out for walks, but the dog had one foible, although he was very good both with people and other dogs, he absolutely hated joggers. One day we were out walking and an elderly female jogger ran past. The dog bit her on the backside and gripped her jogging bottoms, nearly causing a I did apologise, but she wisely increased her speed and ran off (the jogger that is).
We've got a rescue cat now, she's an absolute bag of nerves, particularly terrified of strangers. Recently we needed a central heating engineer, and when he came in she rushed out and sat in the rain for 2 hours until he left.
Our bundle of fun is taken for a walk three times a day, she is alright to go for a walk in the morning as she is now well house trained, in the afternoon we have to go out around 5 once the sun is going down and is not too hot for her, at night she will do her business and do an about turn for indoors and bed. She will not mess Mrs Elfs about, but with me she knows she can misbehave like a child and I will let her get away with things
Had her 7 years she's called Skippy because she was found in a skip. She's only affectionate when she's outside, doesn't like being stroked indoors except in one particular room. When kittens are separated from their mother too soon they usually don't fully recover.
