Peterborough United v Sunderland – Skybet League One Last time out Sunderland beat Burnley and Peterborough beat MK Dons. The Black Cats travel to the Weston Homes Stadium after an impressive Carabao cup victory at Burnley on Wednesday evening. Chris Maguire is a major doubt and Jack Ross will make a late call on both Maguire and Marc McNulty, who is nearing a return from a hamstring problem. Duncan Watmore (thigh) and Ethan Robson are still side lined through injury. Joel Lynch is still a little bit behind fitness-wise because he hasn’t really done a pre-season. Peterborough United go in search of their first home win of the season buoyed by back-to-back away wins last week. They will face a stern test against a Sunderland side heavily fancied by many for automatic promotion. Last season the corresponding fixture finished 1-1 and Posh will be hopeful of forcing another positive result in front of a bumper crowd on Saturday. Jack Ross: “I enjoyed it, but for me, other than the players, what I probably took the greatest pride from was that as a club, we went to a Premier League ground and recorded a win like that.” “For the people who work at the club and the supporters, those that went down and those that couldn’t, it has been tough over the last few years and they’ve had a bit of stick.” “All those that missed out at Burnley were rested, with the exception of Chris who had a little bit of a knock.” “We’ll see how they both react, to training and not training, over the course of this evening and then tomorrow morning.” “Duncan was scheduled to play on Wednesday but suffered a recurrence post-training on Tuesday” Press preview: https://www.safc.com/news/team-news/2019/august/press-conference-v-peterborough-united Darren Ferguson: “We’re playing well and we’ve won back-to-back away games without conceding a goal. I don’t think this group would ever be complacent, but the fact that we are playing the biggest club in League One and that it will be another fantastic atmosphere at our place ensures that there will be no over confidence.” “I’m glad that we are playing Sunderland now. We know we will have to produce our absolute best to win the game, but we will be confident of just doing that. It was a fantastic occasion when we played them towards the end of last season because both sets of fans really got involved.” “I don’t see any reason why it won’t be just the same on Saturday. We are looking forward to it and I suspect that Sunderland will be as well.” Match Appointments: Referee: CRAIG HICKS Assistants: Nicholas Cooper and Marvyn Amphlett Fourth Official: David Plowright Team Line ups Sunderland: J.McLaughlin, C.McLaughlin, Ozturk, Willis, Hume, Leadbitter, Power, Gooch, McGeady, Maguire, Wyke Subs: Burge, Flanagan, O’Nien, McGeouch, Dobson, Embleton, Grigg Injured: Robson, Watmore Peterborough: Pym, Mason, Beevers, Kent, Blake-Tracy, Reed, Boyd, Knight, Maddison, Eisa, Toney Subs: Butler, Dembélé, Bennett, Tasdemir, Ward, O'Malley, Burrows, Injured: tbc Betting Odds: Home 13/8 Away 6/4 Draw 12/5 My two pence: A great win on Wednesday makes it five wins on the bounce. That form table makes good viewing but Peterborough away will be a tough fixture as they have plenty of attacking options and will be up there at the end of the season. I think Jack will revert to the team that beat Wimbledon, but he may be tempted to make a few tweaks after the midweek performance and the results of the late fitness tests. My guess is a 2-3 away win The Football Supporters’ Association have urged fans of all EFL clubs to unite in applause during the 27th minute for the Shakers - who were removed from League One earlier this week after a suitable buyer failed to be found. Ha’way the Lads
Tough, tough game this. I actually think a draw would be a very decent result, but could go any way this one. They are a real handful going forward, Toney and Eisa is probably the best front 2 in the league and Maddison is excellent behind them. I’m saying a draw but in reality no idea. A win would be massive in this one.
Difficult place to keep a clean sheet but we're overdue one so why not tomorrow so I'll go for my usual 2-0 to the lads.
good summary, fella. I'd be happy with a point at their place, but we can't play for that as we'll get punished sitting back. Attack is our best form of defence and I think we'll need more legs though the middle for this one - I wonder if Dobson will get a full run out instead of Grant.
Tough game. Only been there once (5-2 defeat in the early '90s) and they have a good set of fans. Still, we are hot right now and it's good to play them while we are. p.s. another great post RTB
It'll be tough but if we can beat a strong Burnley second 11 then we should be able to beat Peterborough. 2-1 to the lads.
Just can't see us losing, confidence is creeping into the player's. Three point's will be a fantastic result, away draw fare doe's a point at there ground' ktf.
A win or JR out is what I say . I think with the strength we have in depth and game changers on the bench I think an open game will produce a high scoring game. 2-4 to the cuddlies. Mind you what Nads said about Toney is right. We were terrified of him up here last season.
Good time to be playing them, this will be a real test, make no mistake, and I don't think we will, 1-2. But I'd be happy with a draw. Great post RTB your a star.
if we sit back I think they’ll turn us over. Need someone like Dobson, Power, O’Nien in the middle of the pitch man-marking that Madison, he’s the one feeding the forwards. Keep him quiet, make them cross for Willis and Ozturk to clear, and try and hit them on the counter.
Morning all...for reasons involving Yellowbelly junior preferring to watch this game with his mates rather than with his Dad (little git) I have a spare ticket in our end for the game today if it helps anyone - first come first served...I'll be near their ground from about 2/2.15
No Maguire or Hume, McNulty starts, looks like C.McLaughlin at left back. O'Nien right back please log in to view this image
