Pete Doherty dedicates song to QPR striker Charlie Austin as The Libertines headline Leeds Festival Band filled headline set with old material and tracks from new album 'Anthems For Doomed Youth' Barry Nicolson, 28th August 2015 Related Articles The Libertines open with classic material as Leeds Festival 2015 headline set begins The Libertines announce details of new album 'Anthems For Doomed Youth' The Libertines brought the first night of this year’s Leeds festival to a close with a 90-minute set which mixed old favourites with new material from their forthcoming third LP, ‘Anthems For Doomed Youth’. Taking to the stage to the strains of Vera Lynn's 'We'll Meet Again', the band then launched into 'Horror Show', the first track of an opening salvo which also included fan favourites 'Vertigo' and 'The Delaney', as well as 2004 single 'Can't Stand Me Now'. "They're playing Huddersfield tomorrow. Any Huddersfield fans here? There are probably more of them on the moon." He then went on to dedicate 'Time For Heroes' to "Stan Bowles, Charlie Austin and Humprey Bogart,” and joked that, “It’s nice to see that Liam Gallagher could make it tonight,” pointing to an unseen audience member. image: http://nme.assets.ipccdn.co.uk/images/article_x4/2015Libertines_Leeds_02_PG_290815.jpg please log in to view this image Pooneh Ghana/NME Recent single 'Gunga Din' was met with a warm reception from the crowd, but it was another "old new old song," the previously-recorded 'You're My Waterloo', which provided one of the set's most striking moments, as Doherty crooned along to a piano backing. Other new songs played tonight included ‘Barbarians’ and the mournful, Carl Barat-sung title track from the band’s new album. SEE MORE: Living Up To The Headline Hype? The Libertines At Leeds Festival - Review In contrast to their last appearance here in 2010, when their performance momentarily ground to a halt over safety concerns, the crowd seemed surprisingly sedate, prompting Doherty to remark at one point, "What's up with you lot tonight, anyway? You're making us feel really unloved." Things became livelier after the bands returned to the stage for a five-song encore which focussed on the band's early material, with 'Up The Bracket', 'I Get Along' and 'What a Waster' winning over the crowd before the set came to a rousing, emotional climax with 'Don't look Back Into The Sun’, ending with the band members in a group hug at the front of the stage. On their day they are excellent, but their day isn't that frequent and they peaked a long. long time ago. The truly amazing thing about them is that Doherty is still alive, must have had a blood transfusion from Keith Richards at some stage. Find "can't Stand Me Now" on YouTube, listen loud and imagine you are in a small club, their proper environment.
Would echo Stan's analysis. Past their sell by date but then who isn't? I also like Doherty's predilection for an old knackered Jag. A £500 smoker XJ6 is a thing of abject beauty
Id BEIN providing you with visuals this afternoon Wubba? Even if there are streams I'll miss it, helping my lad move into his new flat share, thus restoring a zen like harmony to my house. Only the wife and daughter to go and it will be perfect.
Also try Babyshambles (Pete's own group) or his solo work. Broken lovesong is a brilliant QPR reference.
Yes all the games are on this afternoon. I have 22 channels of live footie to choose from although it appears Town v Hoops has French commentary for no valid reason? Have started on the Bombay Sapphire early today, with Hajj season and Eid just around the corner i need to get some practice in
I've seen Babyshambles several times, and PD is a great showman. Yes, he has his demons, but he's a fantastic musician live. Have also seen him solo a few times, which don't quite have the energy of Babyshambes or Libertines, but really good. Think The Libertines are stifled by Carl Barat (the other singer) as he doesn't have the talent of Doherty, but their early material is good (especially after a good few beers - gets a good singalong). The new stuff isn't a patch on their earlier material.
Yes, if your still up at 1am Kiwi this is pretty bad in my opinion anyway, and it is all just a matter of opinion. It's not sh!t just because I don't like it No, please make it stop, I want to get off now They must have been smoking some strong funny cigarettes in the studio when they decided this may be a hit
Further to your comments 'sb' our son just moved out ( for the last time) and my wife and l too are enjoying the regained space and tranquility of the other half of the house. Been painting most of the weekend. Next step is to change the locks!
