i don't really know a lot about how computers/t'internet work, but I remember reading somewhere that ads appear on sites according to your browsing preferences.

Bollocks.

I'm seeing ads for police auctions and 'find single Asian women now'.

Some sites, like Facebook, are know to show adverts based on information gathered about you.

 

I see no ads.

In it's most basic form it's called re-targeting, is based on cookie data from sites you've visited, and isn't practised by every site...although ad networks use it loads and have access to inventory across the most surprising parts of the internet as well as the most obvious.

Michael uses Google, so they will have all sorts on people who browse this site without logging in!
