"We've fought off a lot of competition from other npower Championship clubs to secure his signature, and I believe that shows the perception of Bristol City is changing out there" Quote from Del regarding the loan signing of George Elokobi from Wolves. That statement is one of the most important I have heard Del make, it was true that we were seen externally as Championship also rans, if not relegation fodder and this has made all our current managers efforts to get quality players in that much harder. He knows when he sees a good player and will pull out all the stops to get them and wait if its required, time and again our new signings state how impressed they are with DM's enthusiasm and vision for the club and believe he can make them better players. its this stuff that makes all the difference to a clubs success. This tells me two things. Firstly, SL believes in this guy and is prepared to back him financially without shouting out to the world come and empty my wallet with your cast off rubbish. Secondly, I believe, we may well have a very good manager.. (yeah I know its early days, but I just feel good about him so far!)
Del just seems to have the ability to get things spot on when they are needed. There is something special about this man that we have been lacking for any years, and that is footballing knowledge and motivation. I really do believe that we have hired a star manager that unfortunately will probably get offers from pastures new in the future. Right now we to show our support of his efforts in a vocal way at home games to ensure his continued tenure at Ashton Gate. Long may he reign!
'(yeah I know its early days, but I just feel good about him so far!)' - Ditto. Liked his comment on Player today. When asked about the 'search' for a CH he replied - 'it's NOT a search, we know WHO we want, it's about patience which hopefully will pay off'. Have a feeling it will.
Derek McInnes is not a good manager. HE IS AN EXCELLENT MANAGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've watched City for over 60 years and never been so impressed so quickly with a new manager. He has turned a sad sorry bunch into a team that is up and running this season. A team which, with a couple of additions and some good breaks rather than always being on the end of bad ones, will, I am beginning to think, surprise us all by the end of the season.
Simply we are on the rise fair play to our chairman and manager together they can take city to the promised land.
Mcinnes is regarded nationaly as one of British football's brightest young managers. I find this slightly alarming as that makes him a magnet for Prem clubs, and sooner or later one will come knocking. Lets hope we have him on a long contract...
Its the Del and Doc show!.........these two have installed a new belief...a new confidence...a new attitude into our club. I am definately on the "Del is the new mesiah" band wagon here. He has impressed from day one and is obviously a bloody hard worker sorting out these little gems of signings. He didn't particularly enjoy "celebrating" avoiding relegation if I recal correctly?....a good winning mentality that is rushing through the whole club.
He certainly talks a good talk, but before you all start shaking each other's knobs you've actually signed a Championship player who can't get in another Championship team's squad. He could well be brilliant for you, but the reality of the situation is 'Championship team signs another Championship player deemed surplus to requirements'.
Bluebaldee; I don't know what age you are but if you can remember the 70's when Brian Clough went to Forest and started signing bad boys like Kenny Burns, misfits McGovern and O'Niell, overweights like Robertson and Larry Lloyd and turned them into European Champions not once but TWICE. Just because a player does not suit another club at any particular time, it does not mean that they can't play. It simply means that the manager has other ideas and opinions about how his team shape and style will be formed. Recent example; Berbatov out of favour at Man U yet well good enough for almost every other Prem team!
I see what you mean Bluebaldee re the new LB, but the bulk of this threads "knob shaking" is about Dels work at the club which (at the moment!) is excellent and there for us all to see.....
It's a very sensible loan signing - he can play at left back (so covers Cunningham's injury) and centre half - from memory he's built like a brick ........ out-house What's impressed me with DM is his signings in the window - young hungry players on the way up (Morris apart)
Chaps - don't get me wrong, I can quite see why Elokobi could be a very good signing for you and of course, my own team would bite your hand off at the shoulder for such a player, I was simply looking to rein in Banksy's over enthusiasm about City's 'perception'. It's undoubtedly on the way back up again after the low point under Millen, but I think you've got a long way to go until you can be considered genuine contenders. Cidered, I do remember Clough's Forest wining their back-to-back titles - I was a 12 year old youth at the the time. I'm hoping that McGhee can do the same thing for Rovers, but I somehow doubt it!
My Mrs went to Filton Ave Junior School and was in the same class as Larry Lloyd, her only memory of him was he had a runny nose and always wiped in his sleeve,my memory,he was a fat bastard and ended up running a pub in Nottingham... Funny, different memories, different people, especially when you put them together,he was a big fat bastard, with a snotty nose, which he wiped on his sleeve in an old pub in Nottingham.......
When I met Derek, he had plenty of time for me and my son (though I was struggling to speak of course being in awe of the great man) but he also had a very singular focus on preparation for the game and what he wanted. Everyone seemed to know what they needed to do in advance, and he was just there to top everything up, keep the guys sharp and ready to execute his plan. Even better his substitutions are always received well and often do the trick - on Saturday Kilkenny did enable us to wrest control of the midfield, and Davies popped up to score an essential equaliser. Its all thoroughly thought out and planned in advance. I think he is the next Martin O'Neill. I hope so.
Oh I quite agree Blubaldee. We have a long way to go to become secure in this division. I'm only thinking about mid table security for at least next two seasons. If we achieve that and perhaps flirt with the top six occasionally, then maybe I'll start to increase my hopes and expectations. As I'm a little older than you, I can well remember my first 12 seasons following City when we always finished below yourselves. so while I am passionately RED, I really do hope that Rovers can begin some sort of revival sooner rather than later. I for one miss the league derbys especially when there is a full house with lots of singing and banter. So maybe McGhee will work some magic for you. And Wizered; Larry Lloyd's brother had a pub about 100 yards from Shrewsbury Town and when I lived there, I liked nothing more than a visit wearing my red and white scarf just to wind him up. Especially the day Dave Smith scored a late winner for us in 1990.
"I was simply looking to rein in Banksy's over enthusiasm about City's 'perception'. It's undoubtedly on the way back up again after the low point under Millen" If you read my whole post I clearly state its early days yet and really we have achieved very little. (personally I think Del keeping us up last year was nothing short of a miracle, but that will soon be forgotten!) The main point of the thread was to highlight the incoming 'players' perception of Mckinnes, all without fail have stated how impressed they were with the guy during discussions and that ultimately made their minds up. As for a little mcghee magic for the gas, sadly I think you would more likely get some magic from Debbie mcghee sooner than Mark.
The pub I'm talking about was called 'The Stage door' was owned by Larry Lloyd and was in Nottingham... http://nigelhuddleston.wordpress.com/category/larry-lloyd/
