As far as I can remember we have yet to concede, or be awarded, a penalty so far this season in 11 Premier League games and 3 League Cup games. Is this true? And if we got one, who would take it? (Sinclair gone and Graham out of favour). http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/premier-league/elfmeter-detail/wettbewerb_GB1.html
Was saying the same thing to my son on Saturday. Not sure about conceding one but we haven't been given a pen. Difficult to see who would take it. My guess would be Michu, but I think De Guzman might take them or Ki not 100%. When we do get one, just hope is despatched into the onion bag.
According to the above site, the last penalty we were awarded (in the Prem) was the one against Man City at home which Joe Hart saved from Scott Sinclair. (March 11th 2012) The last penalty we conceded (in the Prem) was at home to Fulham last season (10th December 2011). Michel Vorm saved from Clint Dempsey.
One thing I do know is this! If we continue to play Monk, it wont be long before we concede a penalty, that's for sure.........
your very disrespectful towards our captain dragon, monk played a blinder against the saints and the other games he has been involved in....He has saved our game on more than one occasion....thank god he turned the worzels down or we would have been up the creek without a paddle...
please log in to view this image Saints should have had a penalty from Monk, that much was obvious! The tart is too old, bit like you Dai!...................
Monk played quite well against Saints in general but still committed his usual catastrophic mistake in not challenging the scorer of Saints' goal. As for dealing with balls in the air, he just doesn't have what it takes at this level. Ash isn't brilliant at that either, if I'm honest. Monk is what he is, a great servant and a loyal clubman who should only be in our team when all other options have been exhausted. I have enormous respect for the man and would like to see him with us in the future as a coach of some description. But a Premier League centre back he is not.
he put his body on the line more than once and the ref was right there when he did it and was ignored as no penalty....show some respect for a player who has worked is socks off for the club and has only a few seasons left playing football.....top man and good enough that justifies Sir mikes inclusion of him.....
Monk given an 8/10 in Western Mail by journalist at the the game and a good write up in Evening Post! Interesting scores considering some views on here!
Good post Ivor, though you didn't touch on how the hell Monk got away with that tackle just inside the box! Come on was it a penalty or not.........
I mentioned that on a different thread, Phil. In my opinion, it was a blatant body check and I would have been enraged if we had been disallowed it. Come to that, Ash got lucky as well. It was a poor day all round for us to be honest and we played like a relegation bound team. I want to see far better than that from us in future. Dai, Monk was included because Laudrup had no other choice.
Williams has got away with loads of penalty appeals this season and he's bound to give some away soon
Thank you Ivor, I rest my case, please Huw give Monk a coaching roll, he clearly doesn't want to leave us, nowt wrong with that!................
Phil, I think it's far too early to put Monk out to grass. He is an honest and committed player who would do a great job for someone in the lower divisions for a couple of seasons yet. I just don't see him as Premier League quality and it does show up in games. He is sound for the most part then a few mistakes creep in and we find we're a goal down. He's adequate (no more than that) cover at this level but I think he would drop even further down the pecking order when Bartley and possibly Situ come into the reckoning. It seems almost traitorous to think of Monk in these terms after all he's done for us on our way up and I see where Dai is coming from. But we just cannot afford any senseless sentimentality with over £60 million at stake this season. I'm hoping that Laudrup will bring in some quality cover in January because we need it. As for Garry, should he leave to finish his splendid career elsewhere, I hope that we will see him back here in a coaching capacity when he does finally hang up his boots. It would be well deserved.
Agree with you Ivor, can't fault Monks long service, and maybe your right, perhaps he does have a few seasons left in him, that's why I thought the Bristol move would have been good for him, but he clearly doesn't see a move away from the liberty, and with as you say the competition from Chico, Situ, and Bartley, he's going to be way down the pecking order.....
Ivor, Dragon - a penalty is a free shot at goal from that big spot in the middle of the penalty area. We haven't conceded one for nearly a year. Monk is a Swansea City player. If I'd wanted to talk about the end of Garry Monk's career I would have called the thread "The End of Garry Monk's Career".
Dai, Monk was included because Laudrup had no other choice. Don't talk rubbish he is a squad member and even sir mike says he is invaluable.....He very rarely leaves us down and you can name most of the other players who have made mistakes that have led to a penalty or a goal....I would rather have monk as captain than ash any day of the week, Ash plays much better when he don't have any responsibility....He may only have a couple of seasons left but what a player to be able to call upon when needed...good squad player...
Aswan, you'll have to explain that penalty thing again sorry because it looks like we're still talking about Monk
