SUNDERLAND’S Peace Cup adventure could add another £2m to Martin O’Neill’s transfer coffers. The Black Cats jet out to South Korea tomorrow for the lucrative pre-season competition, which will pit them against K-League club Seongnam, and either German side SV Hamburg or Dutch outfit FC Groningen. But the gruelling 11,000-mile round trip to South-East Asia will be worthwhile if Sunderland pick up the estimated £2m prize money awaiting the winners. O’Neill has so far made just one signing this summer, with former Aston Villa centre-back Carlos Cuellar joining on a Bosman free transfer, and a fresh cash injection would strengthen the manager’s hand as he looks to bring in more new faces ready for the Premier League kick-off in five weeks’ time. Sunderland are set to play Seongnam at the Suwon World Cup Stadium just south of the Korean capital Seoul on Thursday, with Hamburg due to play Groningen the following day. The losers of those two games will meet in a third-place play-off on Sunday, before the two winners go head-to-head in the final for the Peace Cup – and the prize money – the same day. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2m is maybe not that much nowadays for a premier league club but with us certainly rebuilding this summer that 2m could go along way to helping us bring in one of our main targets. I'm sure MoN and the backroom staff will be taking this competition seriously. Especially when you consider Liverpool got 100k for winning the Carling Cup and the winners of the FA Cup get 1.8m
and yet.... http://www.rokerreport.com/2012/7/1...on-among-the-star-names-set-to-miss-peace-cup Fair play i can see why Martin is giving them a rest, but I think they should have been given the option to come along. McClean in particular, I'm sure would loved to have played, you can tell the lad just loves playing football - especially as he didn't even get on the pitch at the Euros. It's only a speculative squad though as far as I can see, so who knows?
No mate that squad has now been confirmed. Goalkeepers: Simon Mignolet, Jordan Pickford, Ben Wilson Defenders: Carlos Cuellar, Wes Brown, Michael Turner, Kieran Richardson, Titus Bramble, Blair Adams, Louis Laing, John Egan Midfielders: Jack Colback, Lee Cattermole, Craig Gardner, David Meyler, David Vaughan, Billy Knott, Adam Reed, Roarie Deacon Strikers: Fraizer Campbell, Connor Wickham, Ryan Noble, Craig Lynch http://www.rokerreport.com/2012/7/16/3161818/confirmed-oneill-names-23-man-squad-for-peace-cup? I just don't get as to why they chose to fly around the world to play the kids, they could do that against Hartlepool etc.
