Are you using Adobe Reader ? That won't let you save any text in the PDF , you need to use another PDF program like CutePDF

Not sure if i understand what your trying to do but can you not print the pdf to onenote, carry out your task then save it back to pdf?

ps. when i say print, I mean only to convert the document not to actually print it out.

From your pdf reader go to print it out.
Where the "select printer" option is there should be a drop down menu. On that menu you should have the option of "print to file", or Print to XPS Writer.
Select that option and then print.
It'll bring up a save file box, so save it to your desktop.
Go to your desktop and open the new file (it'll let you view it like a picture).
Do a print screen using whatever combination of keys you need to on your keyboard (on my laptop it's the shift key and a button above the +/= button at he top right, on a traditional keyboard I think there's usually a designated Print Screen button in the block of 6 above the 4 arrow keys to the right of the main body of keys)
Open Paint and then ctrl and V together.
Save the bit of the new picture that you need as a jpeg and attach that to your email reply.

Online applications, making the world a simpler place.
