Head coach believes Altidore is amongst the best frontmen in Europe.
Paolo Di Canio feels he's added a top-line striker in US hotshot Jozy Altidore.
Di Canio added the AZ Alkmaar hitman to his squad on Tuesday with Altidore penning a four-year deal at the Stadium of Light.
The 23-year-old averaged better than a goal every other game for Alkmaar and netted 31 times in all competitions last season.
He has also scored 17 goals in 60 international appearances for the US.
The striker, who became Sunderland's sixth summer acquisition, joined up with his new team-mates in Italy after signing and played the second half of a behind-closed-doors practice match on Wednesday.
And Di Canio is delighted to have bolstered his forward line, saying: “I’m really pleased because a new arrival can benefit the squad and also individuals because there is competition up front.
“Altidore is one of the top strikers in Europe. He only joined us on Tuesday but I’m very happy, curious and excited because I have a very good attacking side at the moment.”

Pace and power are the bywords of our team going forward and although we wont win every game I reckon we will worry a lot more with that new pace and power.

Altidore looks top have come on a bit since his Hull days and he is blessed with both attributes. I hope he can hit the ground running and get an early goal to settle nerves. If he does I think he could bag a hatful alongside Fletcher this season coming.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6bfGp84h0I - watch the first goal in the compilation - i can't remember the last time we had a forward you could do that to defenders.

i don't think he'll score as many as in the dutch league (in fact i think he'll get less than ten), but his presence up front it going to be a massive asset.

I think any striker in the top league can only be classed as having a good season after getting 15 goals even at our mid table level. With PDC saying he is so highly rated surely we need that figure? I guess it depends on how we play, if we can get 4 or 5 players around the 10 mark it wont matter so much.
