Our poor start can be the only reason for Gayle and Gray to turn us down, as looking at where they may be headed now (Brighton & Burnley), it isn't for Prem football as they stated, or at least not this season. It now becomes a catch 22' we need a striker to help us away from the foot of the table, but they all want to be at the top looking up to the Prem. Pre-Season we were a mixed bag from the bookies, a real feeling with the signings we have been trying to get this week, we could make a play off bid, we didn't get them in for whatever reason, then had a poor start, and now we are like the fat ginger kid at a school disco, no-one decent wants a bar of us.
The race is already well underway and we're just entering the stalls and wondering why we are being left behind. A major gaffe again BCFC. We just don't seem to learn our lessons....
neither Brighton well set crowd wise, or Burnley likely to go up this season, Burnley may even finish mid field.. bit like a Wigan team PS Burnley v Brentford this weekend
You would think by now that our past history should have taught us some serious lessons in how not to go about the business of building a dressing room friendly competitive team - but no. We continue to stumble badly when it comes to attracting the right kind of player and our recent dealings, at a much higher transfer level than ever, have left us with the proverbial egg on our face. Lack of effort during the summer means that we could struggle at this level unless we are able to strengthen the team soon. Time is fast running out in the transfer window and I hope that doesn't leave us making poor decisions just for the sake of it.
A lot of people were concerned with the lack of summer business, me included. As has already been said, we have been through all this before season after season, never doing our business early so we get a settled squad in good time. Last year was probably the closest we have come to this and look what happened. I do however have a fair degree of sympathy for SL given the fact that the 2 seasons before last cost him £30m in covering the losses until we could clear out and start again so from that point of view, I can understand the reluctance. That said, we have been badly mistaken in thinking that we can bag some last minute bargains and I think that in making the 2 recent bids, SL has tried to make a marquee signing to demonstrate that he has realised that we have to pay the going rate to compete. I think we have to close the book on what has gone and hope that we manage to make at least a couple of good quality signings before the window closes...
Realism should always be your guiding light and perhaps now will be our time to use that credo to the best advantage.
We are supposed to have serious business brains and acumen running the club, which you'd think would be of great benefit, but the behaviour and reality is more like a frightened rabbit caught in the headlights.
Could it be that the arrogance of our board following last season stopped them listening to and following the advice of Cotterill. That is what it looks like. Also horror when Cotterill reported the asking price of Gray to SL. This has been a serious wake-up call for Lansdown. Maybe now he will stop making these ridiculous declarations like "prepare yourselves for Premiership football" and just do sensible business when its required.
That'll be the day. Admits himself he was shocked by Championship prices. Don't they have the interweb or papers on Guernsey ?
They communicate by goat As for the outside world, don't acknowledge it or you will be put in the sacrificial cage and burned
