Now I know he has many issues which infuriate fans at times but I would just like to say THANK YOU to Paul Scally for the signings. There has been much criticism around the net since the end of the season, much of it born out of frustration I'd imagine, but I feel you have done things in the right way at this time. We have signed a mixture of players that should see us competitive in the league this season and with a few more additions could see us capable of mounting a realistic challenge.

I do feel that at times he is in a no win situation with many supporters and could have walked out many times over but he has stuck by the club.

So THANK YOU Mr Scally.

P.S. I wonder what is the chance of chairmanscally making an appearance on here like he used to on BBC606(RIP)?
 
Some good signings made, despite the normal pre season nerves and frustrations by many a Gills supporter.

Looking forward to the first game against Cheltenham to see the new team, if I don't watch a friendly or two beforehand.

The usual concerns exist for me, financially can we afford this, or should I say can Mr Scally afford this - I'm sure the finances are good, however I would never want to see our club put at risk to bring in player's (no suggestion that is the case).

So yes well done Hessy & Scally, as a season ticket holder I'm happy.

Just a few questions remaining in mind, what about Charlie Lee? Striker? Goalkeeper cover?
I supppose we will just have to wait and see.

In response to the p.s I hope chairmanscally does not make an appearance, message boards are not a nice or professional place to be for football chairman.
 
I agree. Charlie Lee and a quick striker. Saying that how will we accomodate Lee, Montrose, Weston and Jack Payne in the centre of midfield, assuming Spiller and Whelpdale occupy the wide positions. Maybe Charlie Lee isn't a target anymore?
 
I have been thinking about the last 7 or 8 weeks since the season ended and started to wonder, “is Scally a much shrewder businessman than many give him credit for.

We start with a mass clear out of players to drastically reduce the wage bill, this is then followed by the reduced player budget talk, to let everyone know how broke we are and can't afford high wages or transfer fee's.
Week after week there is no news of players and further talk about how we can't afford large fee's, suddenly a news blackout (what news we weren't getting any).

Having convinced everybody we are broke and can't be held to ransom over fee's and wages, wham bam, thank you mam, and six players arrive on one day.

Might not be businessman of the year but he's definitely shrewd.
 
grumpy, i have to agree. i think hes an evil genius tbh. wait till just after the season ticket price go up to get everyone exicted and therefore make the club more money and punish the non believers, whilst those season ticket holders who have already purchased their tickets are now very happy and will do the same again.

i also think hes wisely changed his tactics this year and started signing player to longer contracts. in previous year we have only offered 1 year deals which tend to be more expensive as player no they cant settle for a few years and means we lose good players who are only tied down for 1 year (not saying we should always offer 1 year but take akinfenwa, proven player at this level yet only got a 1 year deal, has a good season and seeks more money elsewhere.

i do like the idea of letting people think we are weaker than we are so as you said we cant be held to ransom

only thing i'd like to see changed is not offering players new contracts till the end of the season cos there were a few players like barcham etc that (espically when injured) may have happily signed a new contract midseason even just a year extension
 
Lets give scally a standing ovation at first home game (if hes there).Hess has made some good choices but they needed the backing of scally.The pre season has surpassed all my expectations and i am buzzing for the start of the season.
 
There have been several encouraging signs in the close season, not least of which was the virtual silence from the end of the season until the announcement of the new signings. Credit also to the players for not discussing things on Twitter. It's much easier to negotiate when there are no pressures from the media. As I have mentioned elsewhere I think that there is a fair chance that in fact the wage bill for this year will be less than that for last year, and that there will be a bit of money left over from previous transfer income after purchases have been allowed for. Under the curcumstances I don't think anyone will mind that going against the very significant debt.

PS does have to maintain a reasonably competitive club. If he ever does decide get out he'll stand more of a chance of finding a buyer the club is in decent shape than if he let it go into decline. Added to which, although he is a businessman I'm sure he's also a supporter. That might sound like a sort of qualified enthusiasm, but I fully agree that he's certainly taken the more brave of the various options that were available 5 weeks ago, and great credit should be given for that.

Finally, I'd like to think that he does visit this board to gauge fans opinions, but agree that it's not the place to discuss matters of club management. I wonder if he actually posts in the guise of a fan. Think that's what I would do.
 
come on ,give him some credit,the bloke saved us from going bust and now he is putting his money behind us.like i said,standing ovation.cum on u geeeeeeeels.
