Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson has won the North East Football Writers’ Association Young Player of the Year award.

The 22-year-old had an incredible 2022, starting it at National League Notts County yet returning to Sunderland due to a goalkeeping injury crisis to play a key role in the club’s promotion to the Championship.

He has continued that form and progress this season, signing a new long-term deal in the summer and establishing himself firmly as the Black Cats’ number one.

He is the only player to have played every minute of every Championship game for Sunderland this season, and his consistency has been impressive for such a young player.

    He's a cool one for sure ....

    .... totally deserved imo.

His back 3/4 keeps changing but he just does his stuff.

At the time it seemed like the plan was for it to be short term but he took the chance and hasn't looked back.

Great for the lad and he must be so happy the club decided not to postpone the matched like they could have!

Good point marra, just can’t seem to get a settled back four, but like you stated hasn’t affected his confidence

That's great news and well deserved. Him and Dan Neil seem to be on very similar trajectories of rapid growth.

Could be our keeper for a long, long time.

Nah, he's ****, some comedian on here reckons he's singularly responsible for every goal we concede

Plays beyond his years for me. Faultless in the pressure cooker environment of the playoffs and inparticular the playoff final. The loan to Notts County where the expectation was high to get out of the division helped. He came back a different animal. Hes had a very good campaign so far. The odd error, as you'd expect from any keeper but the clear signs are there of his continuing development.

Quite right, errors don't make a keeper shyte ...

... they put him on par with every outfield player.

Fully deserved. Improved so much over the last year. He’ll play plenty of PL games imo.

Class shot stopper. He’s made some superb saves in the last year.
