Watford wing-back Juan Carlos Paredes claims he has had offers from clubs in Spain but says he wants to remain with the Hornets. The 27-year-old joined the Golden Boys last summer and went on to make 40 appearances last season as Watford secured promotion to the Premier League. Paredes is currently training with Ecuador ahead of the country’s Copa America campaign - the competition begins next month – but has expressed his desire to remain with the Hornets next season. "There are options of Spain but personally I want to stay there (Watford) because there is a good group, a strong team and good management,” Paredes told www.futbolizados.com. “I always hear rumours but nothing is concrete, so I'm psyched to go back to the club and work.” I know there are mixed views around him. I have heard some tosh delivered his way by so called supporters this season. I think, on his day, when we are playing a certain sort of game in which he does not have to defend too deeply, he does add something. I know I am biased as I really like wingers. Overall, I would want him in our squad. Others views?
I'm on the fence Yorkie. Yes, when the conditions are right he can be a real asset, but defending is his weak point. Perhaps if he were moved into midfield or had less to do in defence. At the moment though, I'd rather have him than not.
I sit on the fence with him and remain unconvinced. His debut against Bolton was sublime and I thought we had potentially a very good player in him. However defensively he is not the best, something he is noted for in South America, Tim Vickery telling me this a few weeks ago on the BBC Football World phone in when we were discussing him. When he was named in the starting line-up or was introduced as a substitute I remember feeling very nervous, now of course this may not be all down to himself and again Mr Vickery stated that he thought his best position would be right-side midfield. He may just not being played in his best position. I think Yorkshire your penultimate paragraph sums him up on what I have seen and I do not want to build a team just to accomadate him. Defensively we need to improve alot next season as it was our weakness in the Championship (conceeding) goals. He therefore may be a luxury that we can not afford if a good offer was to materialize.
Is this really a thread of its own - we seem to be proliferating them. Either transfer rumours or short club items would seem to fit this topic - will we have a thread for every player who may or may not leave and may or may not come in?
Personal preference I suppose but I quite like the threads about existing players as it is interesting to get people's opinions about them. Paredes is a good case because he has really split opinion this season. It would be good to see opinions on the general point though.
No where near a Premier League quality player based on this seasons performances. Can't defend, can only run in a straight line, and can't cross without smashing it straight into a defenders shins.
I think this is not club news.... but a discussion point... and not a transfer rumour as such but a request for members to discuss their views on him... (Can easily get lost in a more general thread) I think there are some interesting points made here... Hockdude's for example... I don't think he is that bad... Wingers can have a bad press.... I remember Cally getting a lot of stick and John Barnes too at times
Me too - the wing back is a pretty tough role to play. I also think he got roughed up a few times early on in games (Norwich springs to mind) which really knocked him out of his stride.
Well he brings a bit of colour to the game, something that is often lacking, but I really don't know if that is a luxury we can afford. He certainly gives defenders something to worry about with his speed, but too often his final crossed ball is poor. Think I would see how he copes until January, then make a judgement.
