According to Luke Edwards of the Telegraph.

He also states that majority of signings are to be made before the World Cup and that Cabella could be the first arrival. Weimann, Delph and Shelvey also listed as targets.

So many journalists have stated we're likely to spend big in the summer I'm starting to fall in to the trap of having hope and optimism again. Of the above players the only one I wouldn't want is Delph.

Sixty million sounds a lot, but two decent strikers would cost 25-30 million but I certainly think we are going to be active in this window, not sure if it'll be to the tune of 60 million though.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/foo...er-budget.html

Alan Pardew is expected to remain as Newcastle United manager and will be given a transfer budget of more than £60 million to strengthen the squad before the start of next season.

Pardew appears to have survived another end-of-season review at St James’ Park as Mike Ashley, the club’s owner, recognised that some of the problems that led to a dreadful second half of the season were created by Joe Kinnear, the former director of football.

Kinnear failed to make a single permanent signing in two transfer windows before resigning in February. That left Pardew with a squad that lacked the depth and competition for places needed to sustain a top-seven challenge.

Despite widespread calls for his dismissal on Tyneside, both from fans and the local media in recent weeks, Pardew is expected to be given the chance to rebuild the side and improve on a terrible end to a frustrating season.

Newcastle were challenging for a European place at the end of 2013, but tumbled down the Premier League table, eventually finishing 10th after losing 15 of their 21 games since Christmas.

But, having been set the target of a top-10 finish, Pardew should have done enough to avoid the sack.
The club are expected to confirm the news with an official statement on Tuesday and although it is unlikely to go down well with the majority of fans, the hierarchy hope a successful summer in the transfer market will help heal wounds before the start of pre-season training in July.

Significantly, the club believe they will be able to announce the first of several new signings in the next few days and expect to have the majority of their recruitment done before the World Cup.

Although he is sticking by his manager, Ashley toyed with the idea of sacking Pardew, as he did 12 months ago when the team finished fifth from bottom in the Premier League.

Sources have told The Telegraph he was “angry and disappointed” by the team’s results and concerned by the protests against Pardew during Newcastle’s final home game of the season against Cardiff City .

However, season-ticket renewals have not dropped off, despite threats fans would boycott games next season if Pardew remained. The club’s sponsors have also resisted the temptation to agitate for a new manager.

Pardew has benefited from the fact he has six years left on the contract he signed two years ago, after he had guided Newcastle to a fifth-place finish in the Premier League.
By finishing in the 10, Pardew gave Ashley no excuse to terminate that contract and avoid paying compensation.

Although unimpressed by both results and performances over the past four months, Ashley felt it was correct to stick with a manager he knows well, who has impressed in the past and who has never complained about the way the club is run.

The purse strings will be loosened this summer, with a creative midfielder and two strikers the most pressing priorities.

Rémy Cabella, the Montpellier forward, may well be the first new signing after Newcastle failed to land the France international in January. Pardew has also made it clear he would like more British players in the squad and will move for Jonjo Shelvey, the Swansea City midfield player and Aston Villa’s Fabian Delph.

If the 60m is true then Lukaku would be top of my list.

I still think there are some excellent and very cheap buys out there that would plug gaps, like Ebanks-Blake, Matt Smith, Lee Chong Yong (he would be first on my list actually, I love the guy) and Scott Loach. They could be had for £8,000,000. If we had a budget of £25,000,000, let's say, then that would allow us to buy a replacement for Cabaye, like Cabella, as well.

But I think it's obvious that 25 mill is not enough. Although I advocate Ebanks-Blake and Smith, they aren't 15 goal a season strikers. They'd get about five each, they're just miles better quality than Ameobi. We'd still need a main striker, and that's before we start on the mess of our defence. Being honest, we've spent f*** all in two successive windows, so we MUST spend quite a lot in the next one or two. And we must replace whoever leaves.

Of strikers I'd target Lukaku, Carroll, Dwight Gayle, Ings and Rhodes, probably in that order too. Ideally pairing one of Lukaku or Carroll with either Gayle or Ings. We'd need a third striker to add competition and give depth with Armstrong as 4th Choice.

One target man and one Bellamy-esque player. We've never replaced Bellamy IMO, a striker that runs all day long and stretches the opposition.

Shelvey, Cabella and Colback would certainly help bulk the midfield out. I'd also look to add Redmond for some more raw pace and potential.

Add Caulker and a back up full back (although Raylor is coming back which help covers this) and we'd have had a very good window for me.

I'd be happy to sell Krul (replace with Forster ), Saylor, Ferguson, Tavernier, Vuckic, Gosling, Shola (out of contract anyway), Sammy, Obertan, Dummett, Marveux and Cisse.

Would be a big turnover of players though which doesn't always work.

Please god let us have a positive window for a change.

There's no way we would get him but Lukaku plus a creative midfielder would transform out team once more.

Realistically though Shola, Frazier Campbell, two or three French players I've never heard of, 3 youth players who never develop and 57 world class players we fail to get "over the line"

The Telegraph have removed the story :(

I would be looking to get Andy Carroll back and possibly Wilfried Bony from Swansea. Lukaku would be good but a loan deal looks likely the best way to get him.
It certainly didn't do Everton or WBA any harm when he was there!

I like Snodgrass at Norwich as a creative player and we could get him now the Canaries have dropped through the trap door...

I made the above comment tongue in cheek...... but Luke Edwards has CONFIRMED that the club were on to him as soon as it went up...

“#nufc have contacted me to dispute the fact they have pledged to spend £60m this summer. Happy to pass this info on. Budget is undisclosed”

Subsequently all mention of £60m has been removed from Edwards’ story, though other media had already picked up his story and repeated the £60m exclusive.

A bit moe background here....

http://www.themag.co.uk/the-mag-art...m-newcastle-united-transfer-budget-exclusive/

A breaking story late last night saw an exclusive by the Telegraph reveal that Alan Pardew was staying and that a £60m Newcastle United transfer budget (war chest…) was being supplied by Mike Ashley to back his manager.

The story also contained the news that the first of several signings would allegedly happen within the next few days, with most transfer business due to be concluded before the World Cup.

Also contained in the report it said that an official club statement was expected today (Tuesday) confirming Pardew was staying/being backed and it would be business as usual etc etc.

This (predicted official club statement backing Pardew) fits in with what had been speculated in recent days in the media.

In the Telegraph story, it also said that sources/sauces had reported that contrary to popular opinion (and reality) there had been no drop off in season ticket renewals.

I don’t think it is any coincidence that the Luke Edwards Telegraph exclusive last night came only a hour or two after the latest Fans Forum at St.James’ Park. The prediction in recent days that a club statement would be published today backing Pardew along with claims of a positive summer transfer window, were said to be timed in that way because the idea was to give the spiel to the fans forum members first.

So I don’t think you would have to be Sherlock Holmes or Freddie (Jimmy Nail) Spender to consider that the Telegraph info might just have come from somebody who had been at the Fans Forum, which was apparently scheduled for last night, although details were a bit vague with no confirmation on the club website or via the NUFC Fans Liaison Officer.

The story promoted by Edwards via his Twitter account;

“Newcastle owner decides against sacking Alan Pardew and gives him £60m budget”

However, the story took yet another twist in the early hours of the morning when Luke Edwards revealed the club Rottweilers had been onto him and the Telegraph journalist subsequentlyTweeted the following;

Seen as very few of us believe anything that the club say, it is amusing to think they go to the (over the top) trouble of reining in a journalist who says they are going to spend big on transfers this summer.

Maybe if Luke Edwards had said there was an exciting crop of youngsters coming through and Shola & Gosling were like ‘new signings’, they’d have just patted him on the back.

I love that Luke Edwards is basically outing himself as a lying cretin <laugh> "Hands up I've been threatened with legal action by the club about my fictitious story designed to generate a few sales. Yeah my story may have set a few of the daftie fans of into cuckoo land, but it was good craic" Neither him nor the club could lie straight in bed.

60m? All I can say is <laugh><laugh><laugh> Knock the 0 off and you're probably a bit closer to the truth.

Also JPF, did you really suggest Ebanks Blake as an option? He's fat and useless. Don't know who Matt Smith is? Leeds I believe? Is his teammate McCormack not better. Long been an advocate of Lee Chong Yong. Can't believe he is still at Bolton. Scott Loach has to be better than Eliott.

I wouldn't be surprised to see very little activity. Just enough to keep us marooned in mid table. Wish we were ambitious enough to look at the likes of George Thorne and Will Hughes. Wacthed them for Derby quite a bit and both look excellent young midfielders. The need developed of course. With our management/coaching...................

Ebanks Blake has a bit of pace, and can be a handful, and like I say better than Shola, who we really can't be using next season. The kicker is that Ebanks Blake is available for FREE
and has premier league experience. Matt Smith is a giant who has done alright this year, is 23 and regarded as a hot prospect, and would be good with the correct guidance. Could be perfect for a little and large strike partnership!

Loach is available on a free, and Bolton did nowt this year so Lee could be pinched I'd wager.

Like I said, the aim of the game is improving the quality and depth of the squad with, most likely, a small transfer and wage allocation, and there's four signings I believe would be useful additions for a very cheap overall price.

As a free instead of Shola <ok> He is better than Shola I'll give you that. Not really a great barometer though <laugh> You know Ashley is keeping Shola though, just to wind up the fans.

Loach on a free would be a no brainer. We need a goalkeeper badly. I've always liked Lee. I know he had a bad injury but he seem over it. Needs a good rest though, he played 45 games in the league this season <yikes> Incredible really.

Is Albert Adomah any good? His record for Boro is quite impressive goals wise. Hit 12 in 40 games this season.

I can't answer unfortunately as I only watched sporadic championship games this year and never Boro, but his stats seem ok. In fact Boro's defensive record seemed like the best outside the top couple of clubs last time I checked, with a certain Jonathon Woodgate at the heart. My dad supports Birmingham, so I watch them more often than the others, but there's not really anyone there I would recommend! Had high hopes for the keeper to begin with, but he's let in some shockers.

Zigic is a bit of a gormless freak, and probs on high wages because he can't get a move, but I wouldn't actually be so upset if we signed him as a back up. He's like a budget Dzeko at times, might be useful from the bench if we got him cheap.

Of course, I'd prefer we had more money to spend on these areas.

Hmm.

- Fans ignoring how sh!t Pardew is? Check.
- Drive expectation up at the prime season ticket renewal time? Check.
- Tread carefully on actual figures so we can't be held accountable on Sept 1st? Check.
- Push out National stories highlighting "ambition" to hide/ignore the dreadful state of affairs at the club? Check.
- Talk transfers because the majority of the fans can be easily fooled into discussion who they want to see, rather than keep focusing on the huge shortfalls in the staffing/performances? Check.

Pied piper strikes again. Well, as promised, I'll not be back next year.

Whatever business is done should be completed by the world cup if possible ideally. Either way its going to be a long window....

Im just going to have no expectations at all, enjoy the world cup and imagine that we will finish between 10th & 16th next season
