Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has hinted that Wayne Routledge could still have a future on Tyneside.

A permanent return to QPR fell through last month while Nottingham Forest, Birmingham and Cardiff are all understood to be interested in the 26-year-old winger.

Routledge starred for the Magpies as they romped to the Championship title in 2009/10 but failed to continue that form in the Premier League last season and was sent on loan to QPR.

However, it is thought that Routledge, who is under contract until 2013, would prefer to stay at St James' Park and fight for his place.

And while Pardew is still willing to sell the former Crystal Palace trainee, he has indicated that he will give Routledge a chance to impress after he returns for pre-season training on Monday.
    Under contract

He told the Chronicle: "Has Wayne a future here? Wayne is still a Newcastle United player and he is under contract.

"He comes back on Monday. After that we will just have to go from there."

The arrival of Sylvain Marveaux means Routledge will face even greater competition with Jonas Gutierrez, Joey Barton, Dan Gosling and Danny Guthrie are capable of playing out wide.

Pardew has also made Leon Best, Nile Ranger and Alan Smith available for transfer.

He just basically says that he will be back for pre-season (his job) and we'll see what happens. Pointless.

Don't think Guthrie has ever played out wide under Pardew. Barton, R.Taylor, Marveaux, Jonas and Ben Arfa are our only real wide options. I wouldn't mind having Routledge in as cover to be honest. Would've scored a cracking winner against Chelsea if A.C(H)ole wasn't on the line and may have kick started his career from there.

Hopefully playing well for QPR might give him extra drive in pre season. Certainly give him a run out in pre season friendlies see how he goes.

£2m + Routledge for Gradel? then the wingers would be:

    Gutierrez
    Marveaux
    Gradel
    N'Zogbia

Ranger and Best are hardly a drain on wages. They'll both want rid of Smith though.

Also the bit about Guthrie wasnt a quote, it was just SkySports guessing that we might use him there again.

Yeah but we're going to use Barton on the wing again, and Ferguson wouldnt get much of a look in. I'm honestly quite happy with our wingers now.

Fair point, forgot about Ferguson! Forget Gradel and stick Ferguson there and I'm happy. I really don't want to see Barton out wide, I want to see him in the middle battling with Cabaye/Tiote for places.

If Cabaye, Tiote and Barton are all playing well then it's a real waste though, I think Barton is slightly better in the middle but Pardew's quotes the other day suggested he will mainly be used as a wide player.

I'd expect to see us using 4231 if Pardews said that. Cabaye and Tiote in the centre with Barton, Ben Arfa and Jonas or Marveaux behind the striker

    Can see it being this:

    Tiote Cabaye
    Barton Ben Arfa Gutierrez/marveaux
    Erding

    But want this:

    Tiote/Barton/Cabaye
    N'Zogbia Ben Arfa Gutierrez/Marveaux
    Erding

I think he's got a pretty clear idea in his mind of his best XI, I think it'll be a 4-2-3-1 but it'll be flexible, we can switch to 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 to be more offensive or defensive. I think he wants Erdinc in (or a player like him) so we can still play 4-4-2 with a big man-little man partnership.

I think Ba is seen as our 1st choice striker this season.

I thought so, but £7.5m is a lot to pay for someone to sit on the bench...

I think that's why we were being careful of not spending too much on Erdinc, because we dont want to throw a load of money at a player who might not be a guaranteed starter.

Not that it makes a huge difference but think we will be playing 4-4-1-1 rather than 4-2-3-1

    Barton----Tiote-----Cabaye------Jonas/Marveaux

    ----------------Ben Arfa------------------

    ----------------Ba/Erdinc----------------
