I saw some footage of this year's annual bull run on the TV the other night. Leaving aside the morality of the event, what struck me was the complete lunacy of it. The streets seemed to be quite steep and extremely narrow and people were falling over, getting trampled, gouged and God knows what else and just carrying on with it. It got me to wondering what Council officials in the UK would do if you sent in a proposal to have a similar event here. Probably something along the lines of "sorry we can't do this as it may offend Hindus, we're sure there's a religious element to it so we can't approve that and there is a competitive element to it and the bulls that are last into the stadium may suffer from low self esteem as a result - oh and it looks a bit dangerous". If you could organise any event you liked in your local town and animal and human welfare not going to prevent it going ahead what would you do? Personally I would have comeptitors form every London borough taking part in a race on hippos starting in Covent Garden and then through central Lodon and northwards towards Wembely Stadium. Spectators would be free to either line the route or run along beside the competitors trying to dismount them with their bare hands.
If they banned that event where people chase a wheel of cheese down a hill, I doubt they'd let you away with anything more dangerous than an egg and spoon race.
I've watched a bull run in spain, they have have them in every town an village an use the same bulls pretty much for each area.. They are quite cruel to the bulls as they lock them in cages in the town or village starving them an depriving them of water on the day of the event, and all the locals come along an start slapping them and winding the bulls up further.. also at least one of the bulls will have his horns set on fire for the actual run.. there are quite often deaths at the event, my mate did one in Orba and got speared through his bicep by one of the horns.. all this taken into account I do want to go to take part in one.. I am planning going to the tomato festival which is just mental food fight piss up.. http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=to...=mode_link&ct=mode&cd=2&sqi=2&ved=0CB8Q_AUoAQ
