http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...aniel-Pacheco-calls-Glen-Johnson-negrito.html Something to take the minds off things. It's a real shame- he definitely meant nothing by it. I speak a bit of Spanish (I was living in Spain recently) and "negrito" is definitely not a racist word from their point of view- it's much the same as you calling your wife "my little girl" or something like that- term of endearment. Translated it sounds awful though.
i thought someone would bring this up. it was absolutely nothing and cannot be compared to the suarez incident at all. it was meant in jest to his friend - suarez certainly did not do it in jest. neither are racists though, so not sure we need a topic about it to be honest.
Uttter rubbish. I cannot see how anyone reading that with even a modicum of common sense could read that as being racially offensive to Johnson. Look at the context and the following statements. I would like to hear what Johnson has to say about it. If he's not offended then that should be an end of it.
Oh, sorry I didn't mean it like that. I was trying to keep people informed in explaining that there is absolutely no way he is being racist. It was more though to say what a shame to have this hanging over him when he comes across like such a nice bloke. If we can't discuss that, we're just going to have spend our time arguing the toss about Hughton with a load of IpsWUMs
My "Utter rubbish" referred to the article not your post which comes across exactly as your explanation above.
Its the Daily Mail, what do you expect? This is the same paper that decided while all the other papers were reporting on what a great success the flotilla down the Thames was they would have as their front page story a piece on how the dress Kate wore for the whole thing had already been worn by Tulisa and Kim Khardashian. Its a tabloid that thinks its a broadsheet.
It is a ridiculous story and making mountain out of molehills. Nonetheless quiet naive by Pacheco. Club has a lot of stick for racism this year and it's an issue in the spotlight going into the the Euros and the controversy over in Ukraine an Poland at the moment so why would you tweet a comment that could be taken out of context so easily on Twitter and leave you to be shot at by journalists. Love the guy and I don't think it's his fault, I remember watching a interview with Rio Ferdinand and he said that when players sign a professional contract they should receive tutoring how to deal with being in the spotlight and conduct themselves to media. It's a good point and I think is probably a worthwhile option because if that was to happen than incidents like this would never happen. Even foreign players who come over, are taught what is appropriate in this country and what isn't. I know Pacheco didn't mean any harm by it but any sort of comment on race will get picked up and exploited by media.
It's a different language and a different culture, but it could still be a condescending racist term in the same way that we used to have shows like 'Love Thy Neighbour' and hear people saying things like 'I can't be racist I've got black friends' or the homophobia that's still around today but which is fine because 'we're only joking'... Personally I think a bit of PR training wouldn't go amiss in the Liverpool camp... whatever he believes it to mean in this country we don't make any reference to someone's skin colour anymore.., we don't go around saying 'Good luck my black friend'... it would just be weird. If I was working in another country I'd take very seriously the differences in the way things are construed. Gary Barlow put his hands on the Queen on Monday which I found very strange, if I'm in a business meeting I follow etiquette... why is this such a difficult thing to cut out?
I think this might be quite a clever move by Liverpool. Ask one of Suarez's Spanish speaking team-mates to use the term in a context that is clearly positive. Re-opens the debate about the word, but makes it about the Spanish language and not about the personalities. The worst press Pacheco will get will be "naive young player gets caught in race row", but he/Liverpool get to state "Glen Johnson knows what negrito means; it is not offensive" in support of himself and his team-mate.
