Important games come and go throughout the season and so far we have either been unlucky, not good enough or both in the so called big games.

Opportunity knocks once more for us to make a push up the league, we have to beat Norwich at home and then gain some momentum for the first time this season, hopefully a win against Oldham can lift the spirits and send us into the Arsenal and City games with confidence because if we get that far we need results against them which at this point will be a tall order.

One game at a time some may say but it's too late for that we need a run of games and now or we are going to struggle to get into Europe next season, put a run together and we have a slim chance of fourth.

We are so erratic that I don't feel confident that we can do this but will remain hopefull.

With regards to transfers I'm happy that we have Sturridge but feel that we also need that something extra to really make that leap.

If Wesley Sneijder is available for the reported 8 million I think we would be crazy not to at least try and sign him, the fans would love him he can pass and likes a goal, Gerrard would love playing with him and so would Suarez. Younger players would also be inspired by a man who has done so much in football.

Can we bring in a big name like Sneijder and lift the whole club I think our season may well hinge on this.

Even as far back as we are, I think if we can get just 2 more quality signings in, we can make a good push of it. This year, everyone will drop points, if we can just sustain maybe, I would say 2 runs of 4 wins on the trot we could easily find ourselves right in the mix by the end and then see if we have the mettle to make the jump.

I think having Sturridge alone will make a big difference, as opposed to not having him at all. We now have another threat in our front 3 - one that can score goals, create and ultimately get into the box and pounce on the loose balls.

I do feel if we had 2 more decent signings, then we can really push on - players that can easily slot into the first team.

I think we're at our level at the moment in terms of league position. Goals win games and we've only got one regular scorer. Sturridge might change that but we'll see.

Even with a couple more very good signings (which I doubt we'll get this month) we're too far off fourth simply because I can't see where we'll catch up points over most of the teams around us. Everton have a solid first team now and are full of confidence under Moyes, Spuds have a strong first team and bigger squad, Arsenal are the only ones I can see slipping out but I can't see them falling behind us unless we can scrape a win at The Emirates.

What I'd like personally from the second half of the season:

    1. Tighten up defensively (and that means from all players not just the back line). BR wants us to win the ball back within 7 seconds. Well at one point in the first half on Sunday we hardly touched it for 7 minutes. Get the system working or ditch it until you get it spot on in training and you have the players to play it.

    2. Signs of improvement from the younger players and a bit more passion and commintment from the older players who should be leading by example.

    3. Some sort of hint that this system won't be too easily thwarted in the future by simple tactics (closing down our defenders quickly and keeping Suarez quiet).

    4. Less of the obvious mistakes from Rodgers. Every manager can make them but 95% of fans would have said Henderson over Allen on current form. It's scant consolation but at least he had the balls to try and rectify them early.

    5. Positive news about increasing capacity. That means "news" as in something concrete not more waffle and bullshit PR speak.

I might be on my own here but I really hope we don't sign Sneijder. He is over rated and a total mercenary imo.

Love him or hate him he's done a lot and played at a high level, he has experience and scores goals. There will always be opinions on signings, he's not one that I was hoping for but he will lift the team and fans, he will create a buzz around the place and is within our budget at a reported 8 million.

I feel at the moment that we need a lift and a big signing can do that.

Feel the same to be honest.

My only concern is that if we spend £8m and big wages on him now, will that affect us in the summer? i.e. we won't get players like Eriksen? ...

What do you expect luv? You go and ask a reasonable but complex question; Billy then piles in with a well considered response and you expect others to take you seriously?

Yeah I can see where you are coming from and I can understand that signing him would excite the fans but im just a bit sceptical about him, he has'nt played much in the last while and he seems to have a really bad attitude.

Apparantly, he once humiliated a reserve team keeper but telling the whole squad that he earns 15x more than he does.

    this <ok>

i've been saying point 1 for ages too. not happening... really annoying issues that have gone on since day one.

I think the stadium point is well made, a little sound bite in an ayre interview is not a concrete plan. i'd prefer to hear of a data where a full detailed statement is issued and frankly its far more likely to be a leak out of the council i think.

I agree we would be crazy not to sign him. Not only would he improve the team but it will go along way to convincing players like Suarez that the owners do have the ambition they say they do. Could play him alongside Lucas and push Gerrard forward or play him more advanced.

I think after this weekend we'll only be 6 points off top 4 with spurs playing utd and arsenal Chelsea but if we are going to have a chance we will have to beat arsenal away and spurs home so I think it's a longshot. Lose to both arsenal and man city in next couple of weeks and I think we can forget top 4

The actual player is not that important he is just a good example with him being available. The point being that something has to change and now or it will be too late.

luv, you're right when you say "The actual player is not important". It's as much about the symbolism of a Grade 1 player who can add to our quality and inspire the youngsters.

Yes, if there is a suitable target available we should get in there it may be the difference this season. Sturridge is a good addition but not the type of siging to inspire.

If we were to sign David Villa at this point the quality of the signing along with the inspiration could move us forward and as I say in the OP it may be the difference between us fighting for Champions League other than Europa.

The initial outlay now may mean an additional pot of money for next season, there are no certainties but I think it's worth a shot with the position we currently find ourselves in.

Without the said signing I think we will continue with win a couple lose a couple and be lucky to get Europa. The next few weeks are crucial.
