http://rokerreport.sbnation.com/2014/4/15/5616204/sunderland-transfers-poyet-contract-talks There are unlikely to be any reprieves for Sunderland's out-of-contract hoard as the summer approaches, Gus Poyet has confirmed. Seb Larsson, Craig Gardner, Carlos Cuellar, Jack Colback, Keiren Westwood, Phil Bardsley, Andrea Dossena and Oscar Ustari are due to be come free agents following the season, and there are no current talks to extend anyone's stay. Poyet told reporters: "We had our intentions [with out of contract players] and they didn't work out. We've stopped now and there's no more talks with anyone. I think, of the lot, Jack Colback is the only genuine loss, and many will disagree with me on that. Carlos Cuellar and Oscar Ustari could probably have some use too, but that probably depends on the plans for next season." It just all ties in nicely with Poyet's recent lament about the need to clear the decks and rebuild. He is right on that score. It's going to be a summer of massive upheaval, but one which needs to happen. Chris Young of the Sunderland Echo invoked the phrase "root and branch reform" today, and I think he has hit that nail firmly on the head. Suggests the contracts wanted were either astronomical with wages or had silly clauses Think theres only Colback/Bardo I shall miss from that lot tbh
I'd liked to have kept Colback, he will be a loss. He's a quality player and will improve a lot of prem teams.
Minibus hopefully. Won`t be sad to see that lot go. Hell of a rebuild job though. Time for Congleton & co to earn their corn.
That's a hell of a lot of new players coming in. Usually that doesn't click short term so I think we are looking at 2/3 years down there. It'll be worth it to clean this club top to bottom. From that list I'd be happy to keep Carlos and a GK. Jack, bardo and the rest can go with my blessing!
So why will we be playing most of them tomorrow night. We are virtually doomed with these w*nkers so why not go down at least fighting with Ba, Mavrias, Watmore, Karlson, Mandron etc given a few games.
Have to disagree , good attitude but lacks any real quality. Would be shocked if any top 10/12 team would be interested.
What I don't understand is Poyet coming out and saying losing players like Bardsley and Gardner for nothing is not a "genuine loss" and then playing them in matches. That's not exactly the way to motivate a player. Think it, act on it if you like but surely don't come out and make that kind of comment about a player and then rely on them to perform in matches? It is a lot of players when you throw in the on-loan players who are going (Ki, Alonso, Borini, Celustka) and the ones who may move on (AJ, Giach, Jozy, etc.) and you could be looking at 15+ players going out. Hopefully the youth players and reserves can step up and fill half of those and then it isn't as much filling and instability as it initially sounds. A few good loans and then you may only need to bring in 4 or 5 new players and think of how much less the wages will be next year - if you can come back up (if you go down) I genuinely think it has the potential to strengthen you.
I'm sure some of them are worth a look. McShane, Meyler and Elmo have done very well for us with our "lower expectations". A change of scene often does a player the world of good.
The comment at the top Funky. He says that Colback is the only genuine loss, the implication being that the others aren't.
Ah ok, I read the bit in bold at the top as all having been said by Poyet from the way it was put in. Checked the link as realise that is not the case, which does make sense as it really would have been a odd thing to say as a manager, but I don't think it was obvious from the OP (not having a go at all, I should have read the link rather than making an assumption).
