Seeing as there are already threads about Vermaelen and his place in the team I thought it would not be premature if I asked the pressing question of who is fit to be and or who will be Arsenal's next captain, most likely happening as soon as next season. I feel as though Wilshere will be our captain one day, but is now the right time? I don't necessarily feel as though there is a better option, yet it is never good to force something when the time is not right. Any thoughts?
I'd give it to Arteta for next season, and make Super Jack his deputy. After that, give it to Jack, and have Jenkinson as his deputy.
No huge offence to Arteta but I'm hoping he can be upgraded next year, so I wouldn't make him captain. Metersacker, or Wilshere get my vote.
Not Arteta, as someone else said, I think we need to upgrade the midfield, we need a new enforcer, and if we do get a new enforcer, it's most likely Arteta making way, and will be rotated into the team. I'd like Mertesacker for captain, Wilshere has passion and is great, but still too young, and no need to put more weight and pressure on his shoulders.
Arteta is very vocal - he does a lot of interviews etc & seems really calm. He also speaks very good english. Other than him, only Merts & Cazorla are nailed-on starters really, so the choices are limited. Who out of those 3 would you choose?
Why Wilshire? He can't even stay fit for the whole season let alone captain the team? Let the guy play injury free before giving him the armband. IMO there are no standout choices for the armband. Maybe Arteta if we dont sign a replacement for him.
Great points. I agree with 'The Bonstar Wandit' that there are only Cazorla, Arteta, and Mertesacker as actual starters and they don't really have reason to feel safe if Wenger spends the 125 million pound kitty Arsenal supposedly have. It's tough, I am thinking that due to time in the team and what was already said about how Arteta is calm, well spoken, and logical that Arteta will be the next captain. That being said I see Arteta being a very short term captain to fill the shoes until Wilshere is ready or even before then. I am hoping we get a top class center back or two as well as a solid, physical midfielder (who would surely replace Arteta, in essence), as well as a striker worth his salt.
Maybe we should do away with the concept of a captian ? It seems to have been more of a curse for us recently than anything else
