This is just like watching the Liverpool game all over again, we've not played to badly overall but our dreadful defence has let us down again. I realy don't understand why Evans is still a Utd player, I'm not just overreacting because of today's game, he is just generally useless. He's to small to play at centre half. Despite having alot of natural talent, even in his prime Rio Ferdinand would regularly become complacent in games, and he's been fortunate to have the best defender in the World, in Vidic playing alongside him, and bailing him out for so many years. Now he's not just complacent, he's getting older and losing that natural talent. Rafael whilst being very talented, is still young, and has not realy mastered the art of defending. Going forward he's great, but if your going to play a wing back who isn't great defensively then you need very good centre halfs in the middle which we clearly don't have at present. Evra was at fault today, but I think as a whole he's about the only top class defender we have available at the moment. I knew we should have signed Samba or Cahill in January, with Vidic ruled out for the season. Those players were available, and for reasonable prices. Smalling and Jones will make a difference, as there both better than Rio and Evans, but as is being shown today, there is nothing of quality in reserve. And what's more we have a clown in goal. I think it just goes to show how important Van Der Sar was to us, he was for me the best in the world, and we badly miss him.
Don't let Rio off the hook either, he's way past it, and isn't good enough to play for a top side anymore
The depressing thing is, I can't see any of the current defensive squad players being any better. Evra seems to have lost half a yards pace this year. Ferdinand looks too old and too slow. Evans has never been good enough. Rafael is average at best. De Gea is too young and lack confidence behind a dodgy back four. The other thing that worries me is the lack of defensive cover from the midfield - someone like Keane to help break up attacks and tidy up. I am guessing Fergie is expecting Carrick to do that, and he isn't up for the job If we didn't have the best wingers and probably the best strike force in the PL I'd be really worried
