I think most of us will admit to liking a good horror film. And with the nights getting darker and Halloween approaching, this is really the time of year to watch them. I'm a big film and especially horror fan so I'll certainly be doing it. I'm going to try and squeeze as many as I can in this month - one a day if I can - while perhaps doing a marathon of sorts on Halloween.

Anyway for those of similar mind I thought it would be good to have a thread where we can discuss what we've watched, what we plan to watch, and generally favourite/s**ttest horror films. Even without having DVDs/Blu-rays it's pretty easy to find stuff to watch on Netflix, YouTube and so forth. If you need any recommendations I probably know some stuff most would consider fairly obscure.

And for those of faint heart, nothing is likely to be as horrifying as our fortunes on the pitch this season.

Horror thread, can't fault you mate, and yeah now with nights drawing in I'm itching to watch some stuff..I don't do any sort of october challenge as I'm wary of overdoing it and potentially being distracted while watching something legitmately scary (I figure there's only so many horrors that will actually scare me, as such I have a ritual when watching, don't eat, don't drink ..try not to even blink eh..also have to watch alone) but yeah anyway I've already saw over the past few weeks, The Rite (better than expected, but then I heard it was ****) Lords of salem..like it was made by a 15 year old horror fan putting together a collection of scenes he thinks will cool..also zombies missus was dreadful..

Then went back and rewatched house of a thousand corpses and devils rejects because I was sure she wasn't as bad in them..and she wasn't..I really like hotc too

Any recs appreciated mate, brutal , creepy, anything

The Rite was a good laugh mate, Hopkins hammed it up tremendously. I enjoyed parts of Lords of Salem. I liked the flashback sequences and I thought Meg Foster did a brilliant job as the lead witch. Then around half way through it decided to go on this inane, bullshit route with a stupidly pretentious ending. I do like Zombie's stuff save The haunted World of El Super Beasto and Halloween 2. Love HOTC mate, saw it in Manchester many years ago at a horror marathon in the printworks. Really like Devil's Rejects as well.

ACS, I love The Fog mate. Carpenter's early years were just perfection. As much as I love Halloween and The Thing (then again They Live, Assault on Precinct 13 and Prince of Darkness are all favs of mine) I hold The Fog in my top three films of his. In the Mouth of Madness I love to bits. I have strong, almost sordid love for anything Sam Neil. If you ever want to watch him in one of his finest roles and a horror film to boot, watch Possession. Himself and Isabelle Adjani are just amazing. A brilliantly batshit crazy film.

Nice! I bet hotc looked fantastic, and yeah liked rejects too it just paled compared to my enjoyment of house. I struggled with both halloweens, couldn't get beyond the dialogue and constant use of expletives ..also found scout taylor compton hateful, its a shame as in other ways they are a huge improvement over some other halloween sequels. Both need a rewatch though tbh. Yeah the witches were the best part of lords , meg foster was def great..but then sherri moon alongside her and others like foree, it was just a really poor performance, I couldn't understand a lot of what she was saying. What are you planning on watching this month anyway? like I say need as many recs as possible

Acs you know what I'm not even sure I've saw the fog in full. Ill watch it over the next few weeks

I remember when I was aged 10-12 my parents used to go to the local for the night at the weekend, so I'd put the lights out and switch on Hammer House of a Horror.

Some weeks were really piss poor, but every now and then there was a right good one. I was fine with monsters, vampires, gore and all that ****, but the ones that got me were more psychological. I think the one that 'scared' me most back then was some really ****ty trilogy about how cats killed off their owners. Not sure why, but it just got to me far more than Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, werewolves and Egyptian mummies.

F***ing hated cats ever since! <laugh>

I've watched a reasonable amount over the past week or so.

Omen II - A fine sequel, with some fantastic set-piece deaths.

Omen: The Final Conflict - Sam Neill is great, but it feels low-budget and small-scale, and the deaths are lacking. The series deserves a better conclusion.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space - Pure arse really

Play Misty For Me - Terrific Clint thriller with a fine ending. Excellent.

Salem's Lot - What else can be said? Magnificent. One of the finest Stephen King adaptations (even though like most of King's work brought to screen it differs a fair bit from the book), with memorable performances from Soul and Mason in particular.

Dorothy - Diabolical Irish horror. Avoid.

House II: The Second Story - The first is a classic, and this is a surprisingly very enjoyable sequel.

House IV: The Repossession - Mostly awful, but the talking pizza bit was hilarious

Frankenstein - Fantastic. It still holds up wonderfully well, and Boris Karloff is perfection as the monster.

Nosferatu the Vampyre - Supremely atmospheric version of the tale from the incomparable Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski, with Bruno Ganz and Isabelle Adjani offering fine support.

The 1973 FA Cup was and still is the biggest horror film of all time. I still have nightmares about that bloke in the coat and trilby running across the pitch in celebration
