I thoroughly enjoy his books but here's a slightly creepy thing. In 2001, when the planes went into the World Trade Centre, I was reading 'Executive Orders', the story of the Jack Ryan becoming president in the aftermath of a Japanese airliner deliberately crashing into the Capitol Building. I'm currently on a beach (30 deg with light breeze!) reading 'Command Authority' about Russia taking back The Crimea and using that to invade The Ukraine. Thumping good read. Any conspiracy theorists out there? Or perhaps Clancy had a knack of reading world affairs and incorporating those into his novels. Any other Clancy fans here?
I think it's just coincidence. It's natural to place a story close to the context of factual events. I'm just glad you weren't reading the Sunday Sport, imagine what might have happened, London buses found on the moon, etc!
Whatever you do, please don't read Red Storm Rising next... I really enjoy Clancy's books - however I much prefer his earlier stuff to the later ones. Once Ryan became president, it all got a little silly for me. I'll always have lots of respect for Red October, being the boo that most fans read first. my favorite, however, will always be Red Storm Rising - a brilliant retelling of WW2 and the Battle of the Atlantic using cold war weaponry.
Nice to find some fellow fans. Sku, coincidence - where's the fun in that? I'm certain TC was orchestrating world events to sell more books Meant to also say RIP in OP.
Huge fan, although I agree his earlier books are much better. I'm torn between Rainbow Six and Red Storm Rising as my favourites... Complete contrast in scale, of course! Has anyone read any of Dale Brown's books?
Rainbow Six for me. Awesome adrenaline read from beginning to end. SPOILER ALERT - Stop reading if you've not read it. Love the scene with the snipers dealing with the last terrorist in the theme park!
