Why do we not have a public holiday on Thanksgiving when it was originally an English tradition

Lots of us here would rather we not even have it be a Holiday. Some places here have already gotten rid of Columbus Day (4 or 5 states have, others have changed the focus of it). Thanksgiving will be next, or at least the focus of it changed such as Columbus day being changed to Indigenous Peoples Day.

Not going to happen. Too much of an economic impact-Abe could never have dreamt of all chaos in the stores on Black Friday-plus for many real Americans (unlike you and me Ellwoods-unless I missed something-are only of the half baked kind being ex colonials) it has a great significance and is the one day of the year even more so than Christmas when families get together. I get berated by my daughter who was brought up here but born in Beverly for not being around on that day.

    I celebrate Independence Day.

Getting rid of America is the best thing that's ever happened to us Brits...

It used to be called (still is?) Harvest Festival. We can't have a holiday for everything.

You are right of course the economics of the day are to important for the powers to be to let it simply go away. Being the largest shopping day of the year and the day that business go into the black here. I could though see a change in basically the name of it and the focus to much more of a Harvest Day or Family Day or even another form of an Indigenous peoples day. Not in any sort of short time frame but there has been at least some movement to at least highlight the injustice of what occurred in New England at the time and shortly after. Perhaps a more broad view of the historical context of the day would be enough.

Yea I would probably agree that more people get together on Thanksgiving than Christmas here so it isnt surprising your daughter complains about you not going over.

Well I was born here but my politics are far more common in Europe than they are in this country. We are not really supposed to go into that kind of thing on here but I dont get arrested all the time nor did I risk arrest last night because I am what you might think of as a stereotypical american.

Weren't the Pilgrims persecuted in England for their beliefs, so chose to leave for pastures new.

I doubt we'd celebrate such things like that here.

Unless i've got it totally wrong.

Good call, who would you choose?

    Harry Potter Day
    Bilbo Baggins Day
    Atticus Finch Day
    Winston Smith Day
    Raskolnikov Day

    But my vote goes to..

Every day feels more and more like a Winston Smith day, whether we celebrate it or not.
