I've read and listened to distaste and downright anger about his subject. Most people I've heard give voice against slave labor own an IPhone. Do we care? but not enough to not buy something we want but seldom actually need.? I was happy for us to move to Warrior, I do not want Addidas making our kit. If Warrior are same we should be canning them. No football club should be using a kit maker that uses sweatshops. Umbro are another that do. I have bought Addidas, but not for 3 years. Never had an IPhone and I do boycott stuff made in sweat shops if I am aware they are. How many of you have an IPad and or Iphone or any other device made in a sweatshop by an enslaved person and do you actually give a monkeys?
not sure how to answer mate, there is a fine line between morals and money. i know some people who dont have sky on the principal of who owns it, yet i don't have SS as cant afford it, if i could not sure where i stand to be honest (i do miss my darts though) i buy my fair share of fair trade stuff, but what i don't like about that is yes the right people are getting more of a cut who deserve it, yet you know its just a marketing ploy to the corporations who sell the stuff, they don't give a monkeys who is getting a fair cut. we live in a pc world, if it ever becomes not cool then more might be done about it, but i should imagine the motive of money will be behind that decision somehow.
A lot of aspects the above would apply to. But.. apple products literally have blood on them. It is easy to come on here and talk Thatcher and injustice.. posting via your suffering and blood covered apple phone made by slaves suffering every day every week for a pittance
Answer: Yes, I do care. Yes, I do own an iPod Touch. When I bought my first, possibly 5 years ago, then I wasn't aware of Apple's sweatshops. If I were buying one now, then it would put me off no doubt, but then I'd just go and look at another brand and theres the same likelihood they too use sweatshops. There's no getting away from it with big corporations, and with news corp and other news organisations onside, it's not going to be public knowledge. The same with clothes, generally if it's cheap then it was probably made in a sweatshop, but being a student myself, I just can't afford to be buying expensive clothes, so I lose the morals and stick to what I can afford. I do draw a line with none free-range products though, and only buy free range meat and eggs, but that's another discussion entirely.
Not the greatest fan of Apple, but they have been singled out unfairly in this case. Foxconn also build products for Nokia, HP, Microsoft and Dell, and Samsung's suppliers have conditions which are even worse in some cases. Apple was singled out due to publicity, but if you really want to be ethical you couldn't justify choosing another phone or tablet on an ethical basis. Also worth noting that despite the ****ty conditions Foxconn and Apple are seen as some of the best companies to work for in China. The wages and conditions aren't great, but they hardly compare to the child labour sweatshops of the 1990s. How many people in the UK think their employer does anything more than the bare minimum to respect their welfare?
Surely the people working in sweatshops would be far worse off if they weren't employed at all.. This message was sent by my iPhone 5
Cheaper labour = cheaper products. If I wasn't married with kids I'd be seriously tempted to live in the forest, no leccy no water, no phone, no TV, no Internet. Not sure how long I'd last though.
Patience young padawan. A thread will evolve in time. Don't think about it too much and probably should. I like cheap products and think it's up to higher powers than me to influence such things.
Do I care about sweatshops? - YES Do I actually care about the people who work in them? - PROBABLY NOT
I would suggest that what you actually like is value for money. How are you going to pay for those products when the heresy of Globalisation is played to its final conclusion and we have no valid economy? If you think that's an impossibility then consider how we got into our present economic mess and what we remains of our bility to get ourselves out of it
Its the higher powers that have allowed jobs to walk and greedy profits be made at the expense of their own economies. Apple do well but America would do better if the decives were made there, Apple would still make a fortune but not a ridiculous fortune. Ireland and its Ripp Off economy is driven by State run enterprises or state regulated enterprises. Those have increased in cost to the Irish citizen 5 times more than private enterprise. Never mind that they've brown enveloped off our natural resources to boot. Whats this about the powers that be? It is democratic economies that use a totalitarian or dictatorship state's slavery to boost their own economies. Mass exploitation of millions. It's sickening to see how these folks live. I'll never own an Iphone but I certainly wont judge anyone that does own one. It's up to each of us to make own own decision. There is a complete lack of social responsibility in society these days. We've been successfully made individualistic and self important. Someone should think before they apply their selective morals and principles if you ask me, damning one whilst ignorantly supporting another.. yeah, most don't even understand I reckon let alone care. The death throws of a civilization are excess and corruption. So I guess we're OK cos that ain't happening
