Construction will start early next year on a £150m green energy power plant in Hull after contractors were confirmed to design, build and operate the scheme.

A joint venture of MWH Treatment and the Spencer Group have secured preferred bidder status for the Energy Works development in Hull

Client Energy Works (Hull) is a subsidiary of the Spencer Group.

The firm confirmed construction of the first phase of the development will begin early in 2015 with completion scheduled by March 2017.

The first phase will be an energy recovery facility that will generate 28MW of electricity to power 43,000 homes using materials which would otherwise be sent to landfill.

Phase two will see the later addition of an Anaerobic Digestion plant and materials processing facilities.

The development will create more than 200 jobs during the construction phase.

Energy Works Project Director Phil Morland said: “We are pleased to announce the joint venture of MWH Treatment and Spencer Group as our preferred bidder.

“The two companies are a good fit, with complementary capabilities, and offer the ideal partnership to deliver this ground-breaking project.

“There is a clear synergy between the partners – MWH brings a wealth of experience in energy recovery projects and a strong thermal process capability, while Spencer has vast experience in executing complex multi-disciplinary energy projects and a track record of delivering large civil, electrical and bulk handling works. ”

Spencer Group Chief Executive Frank Millar said: “As a company founded and based in Hull, our involvement will ensure local employment will be a major priority.

“This project will create and underpin jobs within our business and open up much-needed employment opportunities within the local community.”

Is phase 2 planned for the same site ?

Anaerobic digestion plants are usually built away from housing cos they can be a bit whiffy....

Thanks. Either I missed it when I speed read the article or it didnt say where it was going to be, which is pretty rubbish. The key elements of any story should be what, when, where, why?

Is this a knock on effect of the Siemens deal? It was stated at the time more Green companies would be coming to 'Ull because of it.

That Spencer Group are already in Hull and I heard they were doing something in relation to the Siemens deal, so I suspect this is it and the projects are linked.

Was it worse than Fish Meal on Fish Dock? Different, I know, but the fishy smell used to spread eastwards over the city (which is why the posh folks lived out west....)

many years ago i worked very briefly at the dustbin site on the corner of chapman st (possibly the old school?) and always thought it was the source of the iffy smell around there. many years later i realised the smell i loathed so much was from the cocoa plant down there.

I'd say it was, the smell seemed to linger in your nostrils hours after you'd passed the place.

Posh folks live out west in every city. Something to do with the industrial revolution and the smog so I recall from my training.
