Schumacher is no longer in a coma and has now left the hospital in Grenoble.

Aye, I meant he'd gone home to Switzerland...

Former Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher is no longer in a coma and has left hospital after a ski accident last December.

The 45-year-old has been in an induced coma since suffering a serious head injury in a skiing accident in the French Alps resort of Meribel in December.

He has now left CHU Grenoble in France and been moved to University Hospital of Lausanne in Switzerland.

His management company said in a statement: "Michael has left the CHU Grenoble to continue his long phase of rehabilitation. He is not in a coma anymore.

"His family would like to explicitly thank all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months.

"The family also wishes to thank all the people who have sent Michael all the many good wishes to Michael. We are sure it helped him."

"For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye."

Schumacher, a seven-time F1 champion, was reportedly travelling at speeds of up to 60mph when the accident happened, and is thought to have been saved by his skiing helmet, which split on impact.

However, the racing legend's chief doctor said in March that it was unlikely he would ever fully recover from the accident.

Doctor Gary Hartstein wrote on his blog: "As time goes on, it becomes less and less likely that Michael will emerge to any significant extent."

Good news, let's hope he can get back to as near a full recovery as possible.

The structure of the helmet he was wearing was allegedly compromised by a helmet camera attachment, so the helmet wasn't providing the safety level expected.

Anyway, great to hear he is on the road to recovery.

It's great that he's well enough to move closer to his family, but it doesn't like like there's much chance of a recovery, he's severely brain damaged.

He can communicate with his wife and Children, so he recognises them. The recovery process will take months and years rather than days and weeks. The fact his fitness levels were very good gives him a great chance of recovery.

Other than his family and the medics, nobody knows how bad his injuries actually were or currently still are. The fact he has come out of the medically induced coma is a miracle in itself. I wouldn't know if he's severely brain damaged, most articles suggesting that have been from experts guess work, not actual fact.

It is indeed a miracle that he's survived and it's true that there's little information being released about his current condition, but that suggests to me it remains fairly dire. He can't eat and they don't think he can breathe unaided either.

I've read the reports, there's nothing really to work off. It should be dire given the induced coma etc - but I didn't honestly expect to see him leave that hospital. So it must act as a little encouragement.

Sadly, I don't forsee any happy ending to this.

I've spent a little time on a rehab ward and it can be quite upsetting.

I can't imagine he was doing much more than about 30mph switching across pistes there

Agreed, I realise this will come across quite ****y and I apologise to anyone who may be offended but don't be surprised if he's going home to be with his family when the inevitable happens sooner rather than later

Less than that having seen where he was skiing - impossible to ski at 30mph on that terrain through the obstacles. Even for a decent skier like Schumacher.

    I'm also a skier.
